the patch page does not seem to exist anymore - seems EA/Bioware have decided that we can spin on it!

Download your appropriate Critical Rebuid Patch here for your NWN version as in Original, SOU, HotU

My game runs under Windows 7 ultimate, but so poorly, it's unplayable. The toolset gives me an error: "Could not create 3D preview window". System tells me that graphic card drivers are up to date.

The only way I can now run the game and the toolset is through a virtual machine (VMware player) with Windows XP. Here, I can't adjust the resolution (when I set it to 800x600 and maximize the VM window, I get a centered image with the same pixel size). Most of the time when I test a module with the toolset open, the graphics in the toolset go insane afterward (blinking in bright colors and rendering strange polygons, good for causing an epileptic attack). It's very hard to do anything when I have to start the toolset anew after every module testing.

Any solutions for either problem?

I hear if you sacrifice two chickens that lay addled eggs when the moon is full and turn around counter clockwise for precisely 38 seconds the game will be magically fixed.

Alternatively you could list your system specs and actually give us something to go on other than wild supposition and shots in the dark that are more likely to hit something friendly than the fix to your issue.

Well, searching around revealed some general advice and some of it did sound like sacrificing chickens (disable sound, play in windowed mode). I thought I would solve the problem sooner if I whined a little. It worked. I'm embarrassed, but at least my game and toolset now work. The drivers weren't as up to date as I thought.

Whining does seem to be a rather effective way to fix problems, it seems...

Just want to say thanks for this solution. Got a new computer this week with Windows 7 and was sad that I might be able to play NWN. After following the steps the game starts fine, and I can skip the intro now.

Hey my old NWN friends! I've just rerererererebought NWN (yes i think this is the 7th time ive bought the game.... Anyone need CD Keys? lol) and I'm building a new PC. I haven't played in about 3 years, been a tough rehab, and I'm concerned about weather my PC will run it and how much trouble I'll have with it. The parts are still being shipped as is the game, so I've got time to get ready. I chose a scaled down video card because i was worried the newer ones might not be supported by NWN. Check my system stats below and tell me what, if any, problems I might be facing. Is NWN still facing problems with Windows 7? I hope to soon be walking the streets of Benzor (assuming Richterm's Retreat is still active) and facing you all to the death and cussing you in PvP! XD Thanks ahead of time!

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
MB - Asus M5A97 AM3+ AMD 970
CPU - AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz
GPU - XFX Radeon HD 6570 1GB DDR5 PCI Express 2.1
RAM - 2 x 4GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 CL9-9-9-24
SSD - ASATA S510 SATA III 128GB SSD
HDD - Western Digital SATA III 500GB 7500 RPM 32MB Cache
PSU - XFX Core Edition Pro 650W

PS. I am so ready to sell this iPad 2 it's not even funny.

May work just fine out of the box "as is".

Pay attention to the Catalyst version shipped with the card or that is installed by Windows.  You may need to do some driver juggling.  CPU Affinity may also need to be tweaked with a multicore rig.

Other than that, just follow Shia's installation/upgrade instructions in the tech forum (which have already been referenced in this thread several times) and keep your fingers crossed.  There are a few discussions in self-help tech about adjustments made by other recent owners of the newer OS/hardware configurations should you run into any problems getting it to start or perform as desired.  If so, post your issues in that forum with the full system/hardware/version specs recommended in the "Starts Here" sticky at the top of the forum page.

Best of luck in rejoining the NWN fold!
