NWN v1.69 and Windows 7

                I'm at a loss about how to get NWN 1.69 running under Windows 7. I have tried on two machines and followed all the various advice on the old forum (http://nwn.bioware.c...4&forum=42&sp=0). Nothing seems to work. Anybody got any fresh ideas? I'm getting very frustrated (and suffering from withdrawal)

               installing nwn off my old disks and downloading the critical rebuild patch makes it work right away on my windows 7 :s idk what your problem is



you have installed direct x 9 right? you need it even though windows 7 has direct x 11



you've given very little info so noone can really help you



what hardware ya got? drivers? its windows 7 yes but windows 7 has home pro and ultimate as well as 32 and 64 bit of both

               Make sure that your copy is in fact updated to 1.69 (as the updater usually gives you an error and points you to a link.  If it does, follow that link).  After updating, you would then, as per the advice on the old forum, right click on your shortcut, goto compatibility, and enable compatibility mode with windows XP SP3.  Be sure that you check the "run as administrator" box.  



Also, you would probably avoid trouble if you installed your game outside of your program files (x86) folder.  By default, my NWN installs into C:\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN\\ folder, so its usually not a problem.  Its one of the things you can check for...

               Yeah, MingWolf has got it. Install it outside the system path always. Create a new folder in your C: and name it whatever you like. I just named it NWN. Manually delete the old root directory in Program Files.

Install Game and expansions (Preferably on C drive, not in the programs (x86)
Go to the patch page and download the correct critical rebuild and install it.
Open NWN folder and find nwnmain.exe and nwn.exe
Right click on these and select properties. Set them to run with full permissions, as
administrator and under windows XP service pack 3
Delete any shortcuts already made and make new ones
Update your drivers for video and sound. (If you have a laptop this means going to your laptop manufacturers support page, otherwise go to the manufacturers of your cards' support page.)
This has worked for everyone I know so if you are absolutely sure you have done each step exactly then you are probably best listing the details of your machine and posting in the technical self help forum.

               Hmmm. Well that (Shia's post) worked like a dream for my desktop, though I'd have sworn I'd followed that route before.... But it didn't work on my laptop. Might just give that a miss for now. Thanks to all!

               Well, I don't know how orthodox this is, but I've yet to have an OS/version problem with NWN that couldn't be solved by just copying the entire NWN install folder (wholesale) from a computer on which it already works to a new computer.  I think this means you skip the registry, but I haven't had any problems as a result.

               Install all 3 and download the critical update.

Don't install in a default directory... make yourself a C:\\Games\\NWN\\ folder or something like that.

Run in XP Compatibility mode with Administrator rights.

This certainly worked for me with one computer as well.

External HDD for the win!  (I mean, it's a good idea to use one to back up your NWN directory in general, right?  I know that doing so has proved handy for me on more than one occasion.)

I've done this as well, my old HD from 7 years ago is slaved in my new machine.  The one and only bug I've encountered as a result is when I start the toolset, it complains about not being able to find the registry key.  As far as I can tell it has no consequences for building.

               Dumb question .. I have Windows XP.  I know I have an external harddrive and/or a flash drive around here .. er, somewhere.  When/if I do locate them, is it very difficult to get the game up and running?



That is, do I just play from the flash/external drive, or do I have to copy them to my C: directory and/or create a shortcut on my desktop to play?

               I have been able to do both (i.e. copy and play, or run from external HDD).  Obviously, though, copying is a tad more convenient in the long term!

I did not notice any inconvenience in getting the game to run.

Then again, what *might* be a possibility if this doesn't work as well for you is to install the game (getting your registry updated correctly) and then overwriting it with the install directory from your HDD.  

Please bear in mind, though, that I have pretty much no computer qualifications whatsoever, and tend to take a "let's keep trying things until something works" approach to computers generally.  So someone else might* give you much better advice.

* For a value of "might" which means 99.999999% probable.

               Just adding my 2¢:
On my sons laptop with Windows 7, installing from a new shiny german copy on DVD did not work, but copying over the whole directory from my old desktop PC (Windows XP SP3) worked just fine. NWN created its registry keys when I used the "Configure" button (or whatever it's called in the english version) from the nwn startup screen to set up nwn for the new laptop's capabilities.
