The structure of this new forum.
« on: July 19, 2010, 12:27:16 pm »

I just wanted to point this out as I see some are not posting in the correct sections.

I don't know if you have noticed this...but besides moving the forums here the structure was actually changed a bit. It was made more like the NWN2 forums. So I suggest anyone having trouble figuring out what goes where to actually look there because they are using it in a more correct way.

Also in the old forum for NWN2 they even had descriptive text for each section.

The most common error is to post Persistent World servers in the Guild's and Registry section. They are supposed to be posted in the Persistent Worlds and Multiplayer section.

The only section I am currently missing is the Server Admin but I think we might as well use the Technical Support section for that right?

This is an important topic and I applaude the effort to bring it to the community members' attention with its own thread.

However, there is no correct way yet, therefor there are no errors either. The way it is now, it's all a matter of opinion and a question of who determines what's right or wrong. That's why I feel it is so important to discuss it because I'd rather have a community vote on this than let others dictate what we need and where we have to post what (or let anyone post wherever they want to which would make it hard to keep track of what's going on).

My suggestion for solving the SP/PW/MP/Server Admin confusion was this:

Instead of
NWN 1 Modules
NWN 1 Guilds & Registry: Ye Olde Tavern
NWN 1 Persistant Worlds & Multiplayer

we could have, for example
NWN 1 Single Player Modules
NWN 1 Persistent Worlds & Multiplayer: Ye Olde Tavern
NWN 1 Server Admin
(and maybe, if still desired, NWN 1 Guilds).

That way, we'd keep "Ye Olde Tavern" as what it was on the old board, mainly a place to advertise your PW and find participants for multiplayer campaigns while at the same time making it clear for newcomers also in the title that it's for PW & MP. Noone who can read would have an excuse for posting about these in General Discussion or Modules anymore. And we'd get "Server Admin" back.

In any case, that's just one suggestion and this thread would be a good place to discuss it or make your own suggestions (and please do it in a civilized way). Only if we can show unity or at least a democratic vote, we can make our concerns be heard by the moderators and/or BioWare and get them to give us those forums we need with headings that don't lead to more confusion and arguments.

Yep, I agree, it is a very important topic.

Yep, that seems like the best option for this general discussion.

The one real disadvantage I am seeing with regards to guilds/groups, is that no matter which option you choose, you are still stuck with a single level of forums.  No way to set 'private' sections for guild members, and public sections for that same guild.

That, and the fact that Bioware chose not to help the most active guilds, by transfering their active forum posts across.  Maybe they could have just gone back 6 months, and transfered only those topics/threads that had activity in the past 6 months, then leave any additional thread movements up to the respective guild(s).

I don't see that they will make any changes to this...so we must adapt.

Besides...as I said several times...this is the same structure that the NWN2 forum has. They wanted to create coherence between the two forums, which is in fact a pretty sound idea. They don't need to change anything really...it is we that must adapt...

Just because its how NWN2 is used, does not mean it will work for NWN. Two seperate, and differerent games, so the topics and posts are also going to be different. Besides in this day and age we are suppose to be celebrating the diversity, not making everything fall under one way mentality.

What makes you think that? We haven't even tried...

With an attitude like that I could also say I don't see that people will change their ways and stop posting about PWs in 'Ye Olde Tavern' just because of some NWN2 forum structure and some people who don't like that ... so we must live with it.

But let's start this new era of NWN with a little more optimism. '<img'>

Dont whine on me because of this new structure. It was Biowares decision to make it like this. Personally I think it is kind of ok...the good thing is that it is the same as the NWN2 forum structure now.

The bad thing is that people are not using the right sections as they are used to the old structure and to lazy to catch up on how it is supposed to be...or just confused then...

If they are going to change it..they should change it for NWN2 as well...not very likely.

In short: Get used to it!

To believe that NWN must change to fit NWN2 is silly. Yes it is a new forum, But it is the same community. Yes old habbits die hard, but those habbits are 8 years old now. When a Mod starts posting about right forums and whatnot, then you can complain about it. untill then it just seems petty. Since BIO is the one that moved us here, let them make the call on what belongs where, and how much like the other game it needs to be. Bottom line, not your place to say so.

What we SHOULD be petty about is NWN is a BIOWARE game, while nwn2 is from some other company, yet, to get to this forum, we have to get past that drivel first!  WHAT??  8 years and we get bumped below a 2nd rate game that isnt even THEIRS??  LOL

No flames, just want to point out what is TRULY important!   I have no idea to what you are refering with format or what not.  I know i wont "adapt" to fit some second rate game forum's format!  To suggest that it is "necessary" is rather silly, imvho.

Long live NWN!  (like the great one once said, there is no nwn1 only NWN!   If you dont understand, please go out and find ONE real cover for the game that says Neverwinter Night 1!)

NWN doesn't need a number, opposite to NWN 2 which deserves to be second for ever.

Well, I could have proposed to name the forum titles "NWN" instead of "NWN 1" but I didn't want to bring that old topic up and went for the compromise. As long as everyone understands what the forums are for, numbers don't really matter, IMO.

Also, this thread is not about "whining" but about constructive criticism. And not about "personally" but about greatest common denominator. So let's keep it constructive and not personal.

I think this is an admirable suggestion but would firstly go for the inclusion of another forum for Server Admin. i think that is an important forum to have and yet I'd like to see one devoted to the guilds and a place where people can announce special community things/events etc.

My suggested change to oliver's suggestion is that the module forum is not renamed to single player modules as many NWVault modules are SP/MP both and MP in this sense means a few friends playing them together. i think that fits better within the concept of a module forum than it does in a PW forum. I also think totally dropping the 'Ye Olde Tavern' name is going to make things a lot easier also.  In Other words:

NWN Modules
NWN Persistent Worlds
NWN Server Admin
NWN Guilds

Have fun '<img'>

I  vote +1 on Shia Luck for forum categorizer! ''

A structure such as this would immediately point the players towards the appropriate forums. And while add it I would also make some changes to the other categories, ensuring a better overview of the entire NWN1 section.

NWN General Discussion (No Spoilers Allowed)
NWN Official Modules (Spoilers Warning)
NWN Modules
NWN Persistent Worlds
NWN Server Admin
NWN Guilds
NWN Builders: Toolset
NWN Builders: Scripting
NWN Builders: Custom Content
NWN Builders: Tools and Plugins
NWN Technical Support (Self help for all versions and expansions)

In this example NWN Official Modules (Spoilers Warning) would house all the relevant discussions for the official campaigns and the premium modules.

People can we please leave the old-style NWN vs NWN2 animosity from the old boards on those old boards?
It really does not become us collectively as a community, when otherwise there is so much good here for everyone, regardless of which iteration any of us happen to prefer.
And for the record, I like both.
