Running NWN in Windows 10 - Post Your Results / Issues Here
« Reply #15 on: August 22, 2015, 03:52:21 pm »

I'm using NWN without too much issue on Win10. I've installed the GOG diamond download without any further patches, so far, but I have a diamond disk from years ago I can also try.

The only issue I am seeing is that when I bring up the debug menu, all the textures for the landscape, walkmesh grass, etc, excluding the menu itself and my character, are all turned to an off white color, as if the model fails to draw with the texture, and only the ambient light is rendered. It takes about 2 seconds for the screen to white out like this, and after the menu is closed, about another 2-5 seconds to revert back to full textured meshes.

I'm using the onboard Intel HD 5500, so I'm not getting the Nvidia enhancements, or bugs. Is this related to the video card, or is this because I am using a TV monitor at 1920x1080? Or is this caused by the GOG download, and I should try my old disk and codes?

I have my doubts that what I am about to say will fix your particular issue but you never know. For the GOG Diamond version to work 100% correctly you must download and install the 1.69 critical rebuild patch.

I ended up installing that patch, but it changed nothing that I can see. Still goes all white when I bring up the debug menu. I am also noticing that the controls in the video options, like sliders, and checkboxes, do not work in any selected resolution. I see them as soon as the screen starts, but they are gone after a split second. So to see them, I have to just close and then open the control and remember what I saw. Alternately, I can change my video options outside the game, either via the ini, or the nwconfig.exe. So far, everything else seems to be fine. It plays videos, particles of all kinds, and all that txi stuff.

Interesting findings after having to reset my PC due to an overwhelming malware infection...

The first time I loaded NWN after installing Windows 10 I had used GOG's Diamond Edition - for which I needed to use all kinds of compatibility settings to make it run correctly. This time around I used my old NWN Gold disks and my HotU disk to install NWN, ran the 1.69 critical rebuild, and now I have NWN running without any compatibility settings.

The only issue I do have is that pesky flickering at my monitor's default resolution. Otherwise, the game appears to be working fine.

Despite my previous post, I tried logging in with the DM client tonight, and actually experienced an issue here (crash, repeatdly.) I have not had problems as a player, but apparently there is a bit of an issue as a DM. Or maybe it's just me?

Yes, its 1920x1080 via HDMI. If I use the DVI cable it works fine, but I like my HDMI connection better (HD looks so good on this monitor). '<img'>

The nVidia graphics driver is 353.62. No big deal, because even at the reduced resolution, its still a LOT bigger resolution than what i was used to play at. Nor am I downgrading the OS. Windows 7 was a POS and Windows 8.1 interface was even worse. Too bad they discontinued XP  '<img'> Windows 10 is about the closest I've found to tolerable since upgrading from XP years ago.

ODD, but probably related and keep the following in mind...

1. I am using an Alienware X51

2. It has an onboard Intel GPU

3. It has an nVidia GPU card added

4. Only one monitor

5. Multiple Displays is OFF

6. I am using Win 10

Periodically, programs will open in the taskbar but not display on the desktop. I have to Shift+Right-Click and then use the "Move" option to drag them into view. I was not able to track down the issue until this morning when I took a screenshot of a model in NWNExplorer to upload to another thread on the forums.

My desktop is set to a resolution of 1920x1080, yet when I took the screenshot, the image measured 2944x1080 and clearly showed another full-sized desktop sitting to the right of the desktop visible on my monitor. After a long winded search through Google, I was able to track down what was wrong and the solution. Windows 10 was taking the horizontal value from the resolution setting under nVidia Control Panel and adding it to the horizontal resolution setting under the Intel Graphics Control Panel, then using this combined value as the resolution - essentially tricking itself into thinking two screens were being used. The solution was to disable the Intel GPU in Device Manager.

Yup - Windows 10 - "the best experience you'll ever have..." Maybe if you like tracking down bugs. So in closing...

IF YOU HAVE AN ONBOARD GPU AND ARE USING A VIDEO CARD, DISABLE THE ONBOARD GPU IN DEVICE MANAGER.

And...just to connect this to NWN, my game is behaving much better now that I've disabled the Intel GPU.

Just tested the DM client and it works fine for me.

I believe that no matter what OS you are using, if you are using a video card, you should always disable the onboard GPU if you have one (unless you actually plan to use both), and you should do it in the BIOS, not in Device Manager.

Just hoping the same thing for NWN in the context of online gaming, and the artistry bioware, and atari, and WotC gave to their players at that time, and into the future. Cheers to it running on Windows 10, and beyond.

if someone have issue with the hdmi output with the new nvidia drivers (game display bigger than the display at 1920x1080) i found another solution, you can resize the display/desktop size from nvidia control panel

(you can just resize it a little) and then select this new resolution in nwn and it will work (for instance 1920x1068 instead of 1080). look at this video for a tutorial i found on youtube on how change the resolution

Havent yet tried NWN, but other games are working on win10 much better than under win8. For example League of Legends used to load very slowly and when I was opening shop or died it caused lag. This is all gone and game is loading on my low-end category laptop much faster than before. Also I all except one drivers were installed compared to 8 unkown devices undr 8/7. Overally its looking really great.

Of course a desktop user has to turn off all these phone craps and telemetry and use classicshell but Im using ClassicShell even on 7 to get some XP style features and to customize menu (i really hate the dropdown "al programs" list). But after some tweaking 10s looks really good.

Btw, anyone managed to get win7 or at least win8 sounds for win10? The new sounds are awful, I didnt really had problem with sounds on 8 but this is too unpleasant to my ears.

And how to turn of the transparency (aero?) on the main panel?
