Running NWN in Windows 10 - Post Your Results / Issues Here
« on: August 07, 2015, 12:17:58 am »

This thread is meant to be an archive of peoples' experiences getting NWN to run on Windows 10. Please post your results and issues here.

That being said...

Windows 10 Alienware X51 R2 w/ nVidia GeForce GTX 745, Intel i5 3.2 GHZ processor. Using the "GeForce Windows 10" video driver that comes packaged with Windows 10.

  1. Installation notes as per Windows 7/8.1 - see the Windows 7 thread elsewhere.

  2.
  3. nwntoolset.exe - running in Windows 10 mode, but haven't done much with it yet. Did load some of the modules that come with the game and did notice that the toolset seems a little sluggish. Going to try other compatibility modes and settings and post results.

  4.
  5. nwmain.exe - had to use compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 with "run as admin" and "disable display scaling..." checked. Resolution had to be set to 1280 x 720 (far less than my native resolution of 1920 x 1080) otherwise the screen flickered and the program would lockup.

  6.
  7. nwnserver.exe - set to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 with "run as admin" checked - probably didn't need to do this, but I did it as a precaution.

EDIT: Toolset sluggishness seems to have been resolved by setting it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 with "run as admin" checked

i think the issue is more with new nvidia drivers (to be honest i have issue with all nvidia driver since 332.21 even with windows 7).

if the resolution of the screen is set to 1920x1080 and i use an hdmi cable running the game in full screen i get the game image to be cut at the borders (up down right left) and colours too bright and with a blue dominance and "strange", i suggest you opening a ticket with nvidia and write on their forum too

Samsung RC 530, Intel i5 2410M (2.3 Ghz), Windows 10 x64

Geforce 540M GT (Driver: 353.62) or Intel HD 3000 (Driver: 15.28.24.64.4229, actually for Windows 8.1), both from Windows Update

Geforce 540M works fine. Toolset a bit slow, but can be resolved by using compatiblity mode Windows XP SP 3.

Intel HD 3000 doesn't load textures, everything is white. Windows 10 installs old Windows 8.1 drivers. Intel Windows 10 drivers are still beta atm.

Neverwinter Nights Diamond (Retail Box) w 1.69 patch
This is from my crap tablet plugged in to monitor running at 1080p over HDMI. Doing this as an experiment.
CPU: Intel Atom 1.3GHz
RAM: 1 GB RAM
Video Card: Intel HD (I think v7 but I can't find a specification)
OS: Windows 10 32-bit

Can't get Shiny Water, but everything seems to work, even the intro movies, although I haven't done much more than move around the intro area in the main campaign. I play from a non-admin account, so I have to allow the application to run with elevated privileges to execute. Windows said compatibility settings were applied automatically.

I don't think its and issue with the drivers so much as its an issue with the game just not supporting higher resolutions while using those drivers - if it that makes sense. Every other game I have reloaded so far is capable of supporting my monitor's native resolution of 1920 x 1080. NWN seems to be the only one that chokes, and, like your experience, at that higher resolution the game wants to display everything in the lower right and scales it as if its trying to display for an 800 x 600 resolution.

The colors display correctly at the higher resolution but the screen flickers and the mouse will not click on anything - probably because the buttons aren't where they are supposed to be on the screen. Also, the images seems to have a slight haze around the edges almost as if the brightness was set too high.

Hardware:

AMD A10-6800K 4.1GHz 8GB RAM

nVidia GeForce GTX750Ti (driver version 353.62)

Software:

Windows 10 Home (Just noticed this is wrong, I upgraded from 8.1 Pro) [EDIT]Looks like I was wrong about that.  Don't see "PRO" designated anywhere on the disc or sleeve.[/EDIT]

Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (purchased from GOG)

My exprience:

Ran the game twice (for a short period of time), once at 800x600 (initial display setting) and then again at 1920x1080 (recommended monitor display setting).

With both display settings the only thing I noticed was a slight stutter in the beginning of the intro movie, so slight as to be almost unnoticeable.  I had no other issues with the way the game displayed or played.

Ran the toolset without any issues.

As far as I can tell, no compatibility settings were made by the system when starting either the game or the toolset and I made no changes to the compatibility settings.

Out of all the games I have installed (a total of 40 currently) only one has had an issue.  Prince of Persia (2008).  It crashes shortly after pressing the launch/start button.  The oldest game that I have installed is Baldur's Gate (1988), but is also purchased from GOG, so the exec has been re-worked in order to run on newer PCs.

Buying from GOG may have something to do with my lack of issues when it comes to these games.

This is promising news - maybe I'll be able to get the higher resolution once nVidia updates the drivers.

[EDIT]

Seems nvidia released a new driver build today and, while it did take care of the game locking at higher resolutions, the update did not fix the flickering stutter that appears at the highest resolutions. This said, the range of resolutions currently unavailable to me has shrank though. Unfortunately, 1280 x 720 is still the highest resolution available without the stuttering that scales correctly on my monitor.

Maybe the next driver build  ''

[/EDIT]

"the game just not supporting higher resolutions while using those drivers", yes as i said using those new drivers (i updated to the last nvidia 355.60 this morning) with hdmi cable. using 332.21 nwn play well even at 1920x1080 (under windows 7, under windows 10 i can't install 332.21) or if i use the vga cable the game play without problems at 1920x1080

this is how i see the game

This may or may not help, but to get my system to display anything above 1280 x 720 I had to check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" in the Compatibility tab.  At least this works with Windows 8.1, and I can now run at 1920 x 1080.  Without it checked, I got all sorts of weirdness on any resolution above 1280 x 720.  I'm using a AMD display board so I've not idea if this might apply to an nVidia board.

Already had that setting checked - didn't make a difference. I reconnected the DVI cable and...BOOM!...problem solved. So the issue with higher resolutions would seem to be associated with the HDMI connection. Well, I'm not willing to give up my HDMI connection so I'll live with the lower resolution.

Good to know about the HDMI problem vs. DVI.  That probably saved me a headache on PC #2.

yes with dvi the problem is resolved but image quality is worst (don't know if is only a mine problem, a cable problem or whatelse)characters in windows have a distubing hue around them and cleartipe doesn't really help (we are in 2015 and they can't still do a lcd that display perfectly without setting this or that)

I have no problems running NWN1 with windows 10 since I "upgraded". Obviously updated my drivers too, but... that kinda goes without saying.

Lazarus can you post your system specs please - it'll help build a portfolio of which computer setups have more issues than others.

Here's a couple of links that might be useful. If (like me) you get the "This cpu is not supported" and you think your cpu meets the requirements look at this discussion of a bug that might cause it, how to check your cpu independently and how to fix the problem.

The other link is a discussion of some cpus that apparently work even though you might think they are seriously underpowered.
