NWN Diamond Choppy/Skipping Audio Win7 64
« on: March 05, 2014, 04:15:37 am »

Hey Everyone,

Just installed NWN onto my PC after buying it a long time ago (GOG Diamond edition). First thing I noticed is that the audio is really choppy, like a skipping CD or something similar. It occurs on the menu screen, the character creation, opening movie, etc.

I've tried both safe mode and auto on the Audio settings, and have tried every setting in the in-game advanced sound menu.

System is an i7, 24gb RAM, SLI GTX 780 (tried disabling SLI), and audio drivers and direct x are up to date, so I should be able to handle the game no problem. I've tried running as admin, XP SP3 compatability, but still no solution. Anyone have any tips? I'd really like to give this game a shot, but the audio's killing me at the moment.

Thanks much!

When you say DirectX is up to date, does that also include the old DirectX 9.0c SDK? Running that SDK will install numerous components "missing" from DirectX 10 and DirectX 11. I installed DirectX 9.0c on my system and it stabilized many of the older games I was having issues with.

You can get it from HERE - for the redistributable - or from HERE - for the entire SDK. I'd go with the entire SDK as it has any DLL you could possibly ever need from DirectX 9.0 in it.

EDIT: The SDK file I linked above is bad. The link has been removed - sorry for any trouble.

I had 9.0c installed, but not the SDK. Grabbed the SDK on MS's site (the installer from your link kept having errors), but that still didn't seem to fix it. I even dropped the sampling rates in my speakers properties below 48000, but still no go. Any other tips?

Do you have RealTek audio drivers? If so, the issue may lie with those. RealTek and NWN don't like each other very much, although I thought that issue was fixed.

Alternatively, you could try a reinstall.

  1. Turn off UAC and restart your PC.

  2.
  3. Run the DirectX 9.0c Runtime installer from the first link above. The version on the Microsoft site is, to my knowledge, an updated version that that uses their wweb-based installer and does not actually install any components from DirectX 9. It may say it does, but its lying to you.

  4.
  5. Restart your PC.

  6.
  7. When you run the GOG installer, make sure you install the game to C:\ and not the default location in the installer. Your path should be: C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN with all the game folders housed inside the NWN directory.

  8.
  9. Check if you have full permissions and ownership of the game installation directory. If not, take ownership and enable full permissions enabled for the directory on your account.

  10.
  11. Run the 1.69 Critical Rebuild - even though GOG claims the game is patched to 1.69, older GOG installers had a corrupt version of the game that did not have all the patch files installed.

  12.
  13. Try to run the game in XP compatibility mode for SP3 or SP2..
