Cannot Install NWN Complete
« on: December 01, 2012, 05:05:24 pm »

               Hello to all.

I am posting the same topic on NWN2 Technical Support board, so please delete this if such a double post is inappropriate.

I just bought a Neverwinter Nights Complete but having trouble installing it.
The installation proceeds but after Kingmaker is installed and I clicked "finish" button, it says.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
Command Line Option Syntax Error.
Type Command/? for Help.

And the installer never ends appropriately.

After that, if I try to run NWN1, it crushes after the Atari logo shown and the main theme starts.
If I try to run NWN2, it does not run at all.

I am running Windows XP home edition SP2 Japanese Edition on my Mac Book 2008 Early model via boot camp.

Can anybody guess what is wrong?

Thanks Pearls. It seems to be at least one of the reason.
I have created an account with 1-byte characters only and now the installation wizards finished appropriately.

Still, while I can play NWN2, NWN1 is still broken.

After the installation, the Windows tries to repair .Net Framework. Is this a sign of another problem?

try that out, if it doesnt work there is a way to reinstall .net and might also require 1 windows update if you dont have it

I have tried that repair tool. And also upgrade .Net Framework to 3.5 (the newest version compatible with XP HE SP2, I think). Then re-installed NWN1 but still cannot play it.

Well, at least I can play NWN2 without problems and I do have Macintosh edition of NWN1 and all the expansions. Though it is somewhat annoying that I cannot play Kingmaker nor use the toolset.

Thanks SHOVA. But it did not work for me. Maybe I should buy new PC or at least newer Windows OS.

Before you give up and start to throw bad money after good, post your full system specs as detailed in the "Start Here" sticky at the top of this forum.

The Complete version contains two different engines... one integrated by Bioware (NWN1) and the other by Obsidian (NWN2).  Atari jammed these 2 games into a single installation using their own technicians so the Complete edition is supported by neither of the 2 original designer companies above.

What I would suggest, other than posting your full specs, is to try wiping clean any traces of previous install attempts and then try to install just NWN 1, assuming oif course, thatb the disc provides that level of selectability.  I would focus on installing only the OC, SoU & HotU expansions (ignore the premium modules like Kingmaker for the time being), check the start-up screen to see what the version is, select the appropriate critical build (there are 3 different English rebuilds) to achieve v1.69.  Note the performance issues and report back here should they be unresolvable.  Once you get NWN1 running to your satisfaction, then attempt the NWN 2 portion.

IMO the post-installation registry entries are getting hung during system calls and you get either full crash or horrible FPS latency.  Just a hunch from across the pond.

These are 2 TOTALLY differewnt games with TOTALLY different patching methods so unless you are one of the very lucky, you'll need to take this one step at a time. And BTW, XP is the most trouble-free Windows version to run NWN 1 on.  The Service package version should not matter.  In the case of these older games, older OS is actually BETTER, as far as installation goes.  Perhaps your XP emulater (ie. Bootcamp) needs some tweaking or wasn't installed properly in the first place?  Dunno.
