Me + possible new laptop + neverwinter nights = help needed
« on: August 18, 2012, 05:08:30 pm »

Yo, so I'm looking at buying a laptop. I'm looking for one which will ACTUALLY play neverwinter nights instead of this junk of a computer which errors all the time with a lazy old graphics card. So I'm looking for advice and hoping someone will give me a nod and say 'this looks like a good laptop to play neverwinter nights on'.

               Eh.
OK, now I wanna cry. Basically apparently this one may not be as good as the ASUS N55SL-S2019V LAPTOP[/b]. 0_o So comparing:

ASUS N55SL-S2019V LAPTOP £ 649.99
Processor  Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-2670QM Quad Core (2.2 GHz)
Display 15.6" (Non glossy,  1366 x 768 )
Memory 6GB (DDR3 1333MHZ)
Graphics  NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 635 with 2GB Dedicated Memory
Hard Disk Drive  750 GB

Vs also
Dell Inspiron 15R SE  Â£749
Processor
3rd Generation Intel® Coreâ„¢ i5-3210M processor (3M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)
Display
15.6in Full High Definition (1080p)
Memory 8GB
Graphics
2GB AMD Radeon HD 7730M
Hard Disk Drive
1TB

0_o So basically, will these also be compatible to play neverwinter nights and expansion packs? And which laptop would you consider best for playing neverwinter nights?

Personally, I consider any laptop to be a poor choice to play games on, but you want the better video card (for which the VRAM amount is a minor factor in making the choice), and the GT 635 isn't it.  Compare the three cards here:

Thanks for the input. We bought a laptop this morning and it has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M graphics  card and hopefully will work to a reasonable quality. But it is also for work as well, so if it doesn't work all games, then it may influence me to stop being lazy and get on with work.                As long as there are no integrated components for graphics and sound on the motherboard, mobile units should work fine.  Heat can be a killer with them and their tiny boxes. '<img'>

The main issue with ancient games like NWN (just had its 10-year anniveraary, btw) are the multicore adjustments, new security layers and driver compatibility.  IIRC the latest version of DirectX that works with NWN is 10.  Check the sticky info about installing to a Win7 rig and you should be good to go.  Once you are at the install 'n play stage and have problems either with the installation itself or performance, you may want to post a new topic detailing all specs and any issues.

Be sure to patch to v1.69 using the Critifcal Rebuild for your game version which will allow you play without the disc drive.  Test playing without any custom enhancements both single player and coop on-line until you are satisfied about the default gameplay.

NWN may install & run just fine on your new rig so good luck towards that eventuality. '<img'>
