Missing and Low-Res Textures under Linux
« on: July 20, 2012, 09:14:47 pm »

I am using Fedora 17 KDE, a Radeon HD 6700, and the standard X-drivers.

When I play NWN or use the toolset, either as a Linux-Installation or under Wine, Tileset-Textures are extremely low-res, very grainy and blurry. In the Castle Tileset, all textures are completely missing and just white. Most character and creature-textures seem to be fine, but when I looked at the Toolset, many of the new creature skins from the last patch are also just perfectly white and some older creatures are white in the creature-setting, but appear correctly in the main area window, as well as in the game itself.

I did try what happens when using hak-packs, and those seem to be missing all new textures, which are not taken directly from the game-files. I tried the NWNCQ override and that did make more textures show than before, but still those from the haks are missing, those that are unchanged are still blurry, (and I actually don't like these alternative textures).

Since haks seem to be affected completely, I think this is not a case of damaged texture-files but some kind of driver-problem. I did however test the download for the XP2 texture file that is missing in some installations, but it shows no effect (and has the same size as the file already in the vanilla installation).

Lighting and spell-effects appear to work flawlessly, as are character portraits, item icons, and all weapons and armor I've seen so far.

Can anyone help me with this?
Usually downloading drivers from the manufacturer is the first thing to do, but Radeon drivers for Linux are awfulterriblebad and caused me more cases of completely reinstalling the OS than anything else. When nothing else works, I could give this a try, but I really would like to make that the means of last resort.

Sounds like you're using the TGA textures and not the DDS ones. Unfortunately I don't really know any more than that; might help someone else fix it though. :x

I've not done it in a while but I've installed NWN under Ubuntu about 10+ times now on everything from desktops to notebooks to those little netbooks and I haven't run across that kind of weirdness yet.  Since there isn't a toolset that runs natively on *nix, I haven't tries running it.  Just as clients. I'd look at your video drivers for that machine.  Grab some of the "non free"/proprietary drivers.

Also, I'd hit the Fedora forums and ask.  NWN is pretty popular on *nix systems.

A lot of google results I found also mentioned that.
Does anyone have a clue what I could do about it?
