When attempting to install NWN Diamond Edition onto my desktop with Windows 7, I am constantly getting an error that disallows any installation to commence. Running autorun.exe opens a window that looks like it should have two button on it, but it instead has two black boxes that I can't click. Secondly, if i run setup.exe on the disk then a progress bar fills up fast and a blank information window opens up, with nothing but the information symbol. running as an administrator does nothing, same thing with Windows XP compatibility mode. The game does not regester as installed, nor do any files get put onto my computer.

I have the same problem with the game I purchased off Amazon.com.  I tried to 'install' it the old-fashioned way (unzipping the .zip and .cab files into a directory on the hard drive) but I need to register the game with Windows registry and two of my files Data1.cab & Data2.cab wouldn't open with WinZip.

I'm trying to install on a Windows XP machine.  Atari support told me to get another disc from the retailer where I bought the game....yeah, right.  If the game were a new release, then maybe. But oh well, I feel your pain.  I requested a snapshot of the windows registry for NWN Diamond WITHOUT the keycodes so I could mimic it in my own registry.  I'm waiting to see if someone will help.  Otherwise, I just wasted $20.

               @Twinkiey

Have you familiarized yourself with the Vista/Win 7 installation procedure sticky at the top of this forum?  Just about all the basic issues have been addressed therein.

If you suspect that there may be a conflict of some sort preventing your specific configuration from installing properly, you will need to furnish your complete system/game version/hardware specs as  described in the "Self-Help Starts Here" sticky.  There are so many flavours of rigs nowadays that we need to see a clear snapshot of what you are dealing with in order to provide some useful suggestions and avoid the proverbial chasing tail chasing syndrome.

For non-Win7 install issues...
XP installations can ignore the special accommodations of the Vista/Win7 procedures becuase the security profile is completely different for those types of machines.  Still, there are other issues like 64-bit systems, multicore processors, driver compatibility and DirectX version that can affect all OS flavours.  A thorough picture is important for diagnosis, in any case.

Without getting overly exotic, try running the Setup.exe instead of the autorun.exe.

If still an error, Rclick on the exe icon and  under Compatibility try changing the setting to another OS.  This is trial-and-error and I would start at the top of the list and work down (should list Win95 first).  Unfortunately I am not a Win7 user so the security organization may be different than on XP, but in the Win7 sticky there are instructions to assure it runs as admin so recheck how that is done.  On XP, you would use SHIFT-HOLD then Rclick on the icon and Run as... on the menu.  At that point you can select to run as admin assuming you have already logged into the machine as admin.

You can try the same procedure for the autorun.exe instead, but in the game readme, they recommend using the setup.exe.

BTW, you may want to edit your topic title to include the nvidia card model and your multicore processer description since there are likely other members who have a similar set-up and may be alerted to your particular rig specs.  Have patience since the boards are not as active as it used to be.

I mentioned above in my first post that when running Setup.exe, all that happened was an installshield progress bar would fill very fast and an information window would pop up with nothing in it. I ran setup.exe and autorun.exe in all compatibility modes, and all as administrator, nothing changed. Again, is there any way I would be able to post screenshots as to what I'm talking about, just to give a better idea of what is happening?

Seeing the posts here lately about not being able to install NWN Diamond on XP SP3 or Win7, I suspect that the setup.exe from NWN diamond does not work properly with the newer Windows systems. I myself have the classic three CD version and both add ons in separate boxes and that version still works fine - as well as does the new NWN complete edition with NWN, NWN2 and all add ons. That is really bad. On Win7, it might be a solution to run the installer in WinXP SP1 or SP2 compatibility mode - that's all I can think of.

Sorry for all of you who cannot install NWN and only get the empty info box.

Greetings
Skildron

Apologies. Missed that. '<img'>  Skildron is noticing the same misfortune with new systems as I have... which means when my own upgrade is forced, I will be in the same tenuous situation.  I have considered installing some sort of alternate boot program but even that may not resolve the system-specific issues that Skil mentioned.

Again, is there any way I would be able to post screenshots as to what I'm talking about, just to give a better idea of what is happening?

The method I have used is to load pics into a free storage site like Photobucket and then provide a link within the post using BBcode.  Be cautioned to keep the pic size as small as possible and I would recommend cropping out only the most significant portion of the screenshot in order to expedite page load time.

Is there any way you can try installing from, say, the GoG version? Beginning to wonder if it's the Diamond box set that has some kind of fault.

One thing you could try is disabling the W7 transparencywhatchamacallit thing. Don't know why but that fixed some issues with older games for me (now I just leave it off because I'm lazy)...

Hmmm... (just speculating here)...  some experienced NWNers and/or tech guru needs to evaluate the following:

Let's assume that a game owner had a list of folder names and file names that would appear after a successful installation took place, provided by someone who had a working app installed. K?

Now, if that was the case, couldn't the files just be copied directly off the CD/DVD(s) directly into the applicable folders on the C: drive and then the game should start and play as normal?  In some cases. like the 2da compilations, they may install as compressed files and the game reads them in that form (again, I am assuming that is the case because none of the individual uncompressed 2das are located anywhere on the harddrive, unless override contains custom ones). Of course, it may be necessary to create the registry key structure before it could be patched, but that is a fairly straightforward and small task.  Naturally, the Uninstall Wizard wouldn't work but uninstalling is just the reverse anyway.

What do you all think?  I've never read about this approach before even on the legacy boards so am wondering why this wouldn't work.  If a disc had been slightly damaged, that means that only the damaged file would need to be procured to start the game. Pretty much all the install wizard does is the same process as a manual copy plus build the registry entries so I would expect it could all be done manually.  But I have fantasized about many things in my life and this could well be just another addendum on a long wish list. '<img'>  IIRC from v1.68 forward, the game runs off the harddrive anyway and the disc can be removed from the drive.

               Did you turn off UAC?

Skildron..Its been my experience that I havn't ran into any problems installing.I have installed this for several friends from Diamond and GOG.
The only hicup is without Opengl graphics card the intel® doesnt support shiny water.

OK, knight, but there must be some quirk somewhere because there have been lots of people lately telling about the installation process failing and only seeing that info box without any text. Is your WinXP updated to SP3?

I never had any troubles installing, either, but that does not mean nobody else has.

Greetings

Yes, I do, and doing so did nothing, sadly
