NWN Periodically Freezing/Crashing with OpenGL Error 2
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:09:01 am »

Hello, I'm wondering if people can help me with an ongoing frustrating problem.

When NWN plays, it plays beautifully.  Silky smooth, no lag.  However, about an hour or so into play, NWN stops responding, and after a moment of waiting, it gives me an OpenGL error about a disconnect with the video driver, Code 2.  I have attempted to upgrade my video drivers and sound drivers, to no avail.  Nothing in the game needs to happen for the freeze to happen.  I can be either walking along or just sitting in one spot conversing with my friends.  I am running Windows 7, on a Core i5 quad-core with an nVidia GeForce 450 GTS.  My laptop, which runs Windows 7 with a Core 2 Duo processor and an ATI chipset, plays the game a bit slowly but never encounters this lockup issue.  CPU affinity settings don't seem to make a difference, either.  I do not have this problem in any other game.

Can anyone help me out?

Thermal problems? Dust off the fans of your video card and CPU - NWN is very hardware intensive, even on new hardware.

I've been getting this as well
Gainward Phantom GTX 580 3GB VRam

nVidia OpenGL driver lost connection / tdr time out etc.

I didnt know whether it was my card that was faulty or not.
So I replaced it with an older card. (1GB vRAM)
The error went away - for the most part, but was still bit spotty... and didnt wana lose the use of a £500 graphics card, so I formatted my PC last night, and have the new/£500 quid one in again.
So far, no errors.
It could actually be Driver related, and not GPU Hardware related.

Also ensure that your settings for Power Management in nVidia 3d Options are set to
'Prefer Maximum Performance' - opposed to Adaptive

I've ordered alot of new components - im building a new PC from scratch.

Asus Crosshair V Formula AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard  Â£149.99

AMD Bulldozer FX-8 Eight Core 8120@8150 Black Edition 3.60Ghz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail with FREE Deus Ex & Dirt Showdown PC Games  Â£119.99

These arrive on Friday - if my Graphics Card is indeed messed up, I will be getting a new one either next month, or month after.
And it will be another powerful one.

Yes - I know that nwn doesnt need 8 core processors.
This will be mostly for newly developed games.

Doubtful.  I have five case fans and a beefy CPU fan, and none of my other games, some which are far more hardware intensive, ever experience the issue.

Thanks for the feedback.  Sounds to me, though, if it is still doing it with your older card, then it may very well be a driver or settings issue.

I'm going to try to switch the 3D Options like you said and see if that helps.  If not, I'm going to see if clearing off my display drivers and installing them fresh do the trick.  I'll post here if I still run into the problem.

Any update on this? I get this error if I go afk with the game running and then return after about 10 minutes. It's as if the card enters sleep mode due to inactivity, and since the game is running it crashes.

The OpenGL error occurs with nVidia series 300 drivers and higher. The way around it involves what Baalos is referring to, but the power management options only show up if you have Vista or higher. Even setting it to maximize power may not be enough, so you'll want to find a program nVidia installs called "PowerMizer" and disable it. It requires fiddling with your registry to this, however. Full details on disabling PowerMizer are in this YouTube video:
