ATI Drivers v12.2 and v12.3 - WARNING
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:10:55 am »

If you're an ATI graphic card owner, know that v12.2 and v12.3 does not have OpenGL support, which NWN requires, so you will not be able to launch or even play NWN.

Stick to v12.1 if you must rollback.

FP!

               Kudos, FP!

If it can't be rolled back (like if the latest driver was bundled with the card), here are the download pages for older Catalysts:

For WinXP 32-bit
For Vista/Win7 32-bit
For Vista/Win7 64-bit
For WinXP Pro 64-bit

I was taught that you should only upgrade your drivers if you are having trouble with the ones you are using. I am still using version 8.762.0.0 and NWN is working very nicely with Video Quality set at Best at 1900x1080 60MHz on my old Radeon HD 4870.

Explain then how I am on 12.3 and can still play NWN on Windows 7 fine?

And from the little Googling I have done your statement is utter rubbish.

ATI Are not dropping OpenGL support and to even suggest they were is ridiculous. Maybe you confused the fact they are dropping support for your particular video card?

This is not a rumor, there is an issue. From my experience on my 2 configurations: with a Radeon HD5670 on Win 7 32bits (& G620 CPU) I noticed some unusual lags with last AMD 12.3 drivers, game is still playable however, but the game runs 'smoothly' with older 11.4 drivers. On my E-350 laptop (HD6310 integrated) the game is nearly unplayable with 12.3 drivers at lowest settings (800x600) but playable with older 11.4 and at medium settings. Therefore this driver issue was more visible with low end graphic card (Maybe drivers 12.1 could do it as well but I didn't tried).

Well, rather than a thumbs-up/thumbs down report, which is essentially worthless to anyone considering the newer AMD cards vs. newer nVidia or vs. others, how about furnishing your basic configuration so others can compare and contrast with a degree of objectivity (Sherinee has the right idea).  Let us all concede that even with the most stringent level of QC in effect, a card manufacturer can occasionally place a piece of crap on the shelf.   That fact should not bias a product evaluation.  The same driver may not work the same with the same card, even on identical rigs.

For example, I would like to know at least the following for each AMD driver yay or nay "vote":

Desktop or mobile rig?
Any integrated components?
Single or multicore?
OS and Service Pack version?
DirectX version?
Single player, on-line gaming or both?
Custom installations like CEP, PrC, etc.? Please list.
Finally, how many hours game time has the current driver been tested?

This would help provide some meat to a blanket statement.

               AMD Quadcore @ 3.2GhZ
8192 Mb of RAM
AMD HD 6850 (Catalyst 12.3)
Win7 64bit up2date / Debian "stable" 64bit
DirectX9.0c/11 (there wasn't a new dx9 in ages)
It would be too much to list all hak's I have installed but CEP1.53 and CEP2.3 are amongst them!

Played NWN1 with this setup recently, played through Gladiatrix and started ADWR...One needs to disable "Surface Optimization" in the CCC and setup compatibility mode (I use WinXPsp3) for nwmain.exe. Ohh and I use the "multi" 1.69 exe from da vault (silly UAC to get rights to folders which my user already got the rights for...)

Took me a while to get NWN to run again and the key was the surface optimization in the CCC....

http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=1522 - Patched nwmain.exe (1.69)

By the way: Catalyst 12.3 of course comes with an OpenGL driver:

http://www.geeks3d.c...-whql-released/

Catalyst 12.3 is an OpenGL 4.2 (exact version: 4.2.11566) driver and exposes 236 OpenGL extensions. The complete list of the OpenGL extensions for a Radeon HD 7770 is available HERE.
