Neverwinter Nights 1 Windows 7 Help
« on: March 29, 2012, 07:02:43 pm »

Heres my problem, I recently bought the Neverwinter Nights Complete sicne I lost my old copies.  I install the first neverwinter nights and everything is fine until I encounter problems playing movies.  I fixed that by playing in windowed mode.  However, my next problem is that everytime I try to loot something or enter a new area it freezes for about 10-20 seconds.  This has become a big frustration.  The video card I am using is an ATI Radeon HD 6770.
My current driver is 11.12.  Any help would be appreciated. '<img'>

Thanks in advance

Hmmm, nothing seems to have changed.  Although the the article was correct in my version being out of date but even doing a rebuild did nothing.  I still have 20 second loads.  I also now freeze up when I talk to merchants and when I enter buildings etc.  Could this be a driver issue?

How full is your disk drive.  also see if defraging the drive helps.

I've got 500 GB's of free space left.  I'll try a defrag to see if that changes anything.

Also, make sure that you set your ini files to use a single core... I forget the line at the moment and I'm at work so I can't search for it. It should be around here somewhere though.
A lot of people were having similar issues when they ran NWN, so they added the option to choose a core (Or open it to all cores) via a line in your ini.
If you set it to -1, it'll use the engine default. 0 will use your first core, 1 will use the second core, etc.
Try a couple different numbers on that ini line and see if it helps.

Aha... -2 sets it to default. Oops.
Anyway, here's a link to explain all the ini options. You may also want to try adjusting some of the other stuff like max memory and such.
The line I mentioned is:
Client CPU Affinity=0

No luck, however I did find out one thing.  This doesn't happen during the prelude.  Everything runs perfectly with no lag at all or freezing up.  It only starts to happen right when I enter chapter 1.

It also would not hurt to upgrade your video driver.  By the number given it looks old.  But with out the rest of your system spec's it is hard to tell.

I thought if I wanted to start playing a Legacy game I should be downgrading, not upgrading? Elaborate if you will

There have been a lot of bug reports concerning the Catalyst drivers over the years. A lot of the driver versions don't work, or make the game act in unusual ways. A lot of people have had luck by installing different (Newer or older) Catalyst drivers in an attempt to find a version that makes the game run properly.
I've no idea which versions work best for most people. I use nVidia.
Maybe a AMD person will see this and let you know what driver version they're using...

I did a quick search and found this thread where they were complaining that Catalyst 11.10 broke NWN. They may have never fixed whatever was broken.
Maybe try an older driver?

My own ATI is so old and dusty it never used Catalyst but, IIRC from equally-old posts, try a few versions above and below the 11.12.  There was a full discussion of this on the legacy boards right around the time Win7 was introduced. Supposedly ATI/AMD addressed the OpenGL conflicts at some point but I cannot recall which version this was.  11.12 is definitely not the latest Catalyst version, though.  I expect you will need to juggle drivers, set core number correctly (for your own config, that is) and maybe even try changing the refresh rate of the monitor.  Hopefully, once you do get NWN working, the other games will still play fine. TBH, there are some really old games i would love to play on my rig, even older than NWN, but they crash each time I experiment trying another setting, so can easily sympathize with your dilemma.

Persist.  The game is worth the adventure into techland. '<img'>

BTW... how does the toolset work?  Do modules open properly?

edit:  Hmmm... I'm wondering if perhaps when installing the new card/drivers, the DirectX version may have gotten overwritten by one that doesn't work with well with NWN.  What version(s) of DirectX are currently installed on this machine?
