[Linux] General Performance Tips?
« on: March 13, 2012, 02:49:18 am »

My system specs are as follows.

Game Version: Nwn1.69 w/SoU + HotU
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital: Digital (Download)
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 1.7Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: Arch Linux
System RAM: 4GB
Video Card Manufacturer: Intel
Video Card Model:  Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Video Card RAM: 256MB
Video Card Driver Version: xf86-video-intel (from Arch repos

I was just wanting to know if there are some general performance tips I can get for this setup here (or for Linux play in general). I previously played this on a rig that had (allegedly!) worse hardware. Single core 2.0ghz processor, integrated GeForce of and old model I don't even remember, 2GB DDR2, but it ran much more smoothly at higher graphical settings than this piece of junk does. I've only tested it in the prelude so far, but even at 800x600 resolution (native is 1280x800!) and all graphical settings off, unchecked, all the way down except for textures, which are set to 16megs, I am worried about whether it will run smoothly during battles. It's non-annoyingly playable in the first room with these settings. What else can I change on a Linux system to boost its performance? Is my situation hopeless? Leave a list of tweaks Linux users could make!

EDIT: Topic changed per HipMaestro's suggestion.

[Linux] General Performance Tips?

Integrated graphics and/or sound is usually a loser in my own experience but perhaps other members can suggest a way around it.  Tried any driver juggling yet?  BTW... I recommend you edit your topic title by appending a question mark so it doesn't appear to others to be an information resource post.  Hang in there, we still have a handful of Linux users aboard.

Intel graphic boards usually don't need any driver juggling because the latest driver is included in the Linux kernel and xorg packages. That said, the Intel integrated graphics devices usually are not that good on 3d games - even compared older and less powerful graphics hardware by nvidia or ati. With the driconf tool you can at least tweak some of the intel driver's settings. You can also look here if there is a newer intel open source driver which gives you better performance.
