NWN Diamond install under Ubuntu - Hotu wont start
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:10:09 pm »

                Hullo,

I changed my OS to Ubuntu recently and was very glad to find a description for installing NWN under Linux. I tried to install the game as described in this link:
http://social.biowar...7/index/4643217

it worked so far, but after starting the game somehow hotu gets skipped. He asks the keys for nwn und sou, but not for hotu. And i cant play on servers that require hotu.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Maks.

               I am clueless with regards to Linux or Ubuntu but if they still use the nwncdkey.ini in some form ,make sure that the key codes in there match exactly what was shipped with the game.  There should be 3 discrete codes listed. At least for some Windows installations, they have been known to be incorrect or switched around. Perhaps on your OS these files are used the same way by the program. It's an easy check to make and can be quickly edited if needed.

Have you upgraded to v1.69 using the Critical Rebuild yet?

               The critical rebuild patch is windows only, Hip. The 1.69 linux patch does the same for the nwn Linux client, though.

Regarding the keys - are you sure everything is the way it should be? There was a known glitch with entering the keys when using the Linux client that leads to entering the NWN key twice, because the nwncdkey.ini file is written in a wrong way, but I don't know if that is still the case. But you can enter the keys into the ini file directly - open the file in any text editor and make sure it looks like this:

[CDKEY]
Key1=<Your-NWN-Key>
Key2=<Your-SoU-Key>
Key3=<Your-HotU-Key>

If this does not solve your problems, then something with you installation went wrong and we will need more information to troubleshoot - like what version of nwn do you have? Diamond? GoG download? Which Ubuntu version, which type of graphics board, etc. - you get my drift.

Greetings
Skildron

               thanks for the fast answers '<img'>
erm no, when i started nwn, he asked for the nwn and the sou key, but not for the hotu key. In the .ini file only key 2 and key 1 are listed (in this order). I will try to insert my Hotu key as well, and report back. '<img'>

Thanks!

               Hm this didnt do the trick. I can start NWN and even play it, but only without the Hotu Pack.
NWN is the Diamond DVD, Ubuntu is 11.10 on an Acer Aspire 5650 (Intel Core Duo T2400, 256 NVIDIA Geforce Go 7600, 2 GB DDR2 RAM)

I think I will delete the nwn folder and do the installation again.

Thanks again!

               Well, what shall I say, this time everything worked fine and I now can enjoy nwn on my linux pc. Dunno where I did the mistake the first time.

Thank you all for your time!

Congrats!  Good news indeed to be satisfying another NWN addict. '<img'>  It's surpising (to me, anyway) how the "keep re-installing unitl it works" method has been proving its worth lately.  Yet another testimonial to the quirkiness of these infernal machines.                Hmm... I'm just getting into Ubuntu as well. I might try NWN there once I get things stable. The whole goal behind Ubuntu however is for NWServer and NWNX. So that will come first.

[Edit:]
Which Ubuntu distro are you using by the way?
I'm working with 10.10 so far on PPC. Looks great.

               I use Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, because I prefer the LTS versions over having to update my productive system every 6 months. Once the new Ubuntu Pangolin 12.04 LTS gets out, I am going to upgrade, though. By the way, I use the 64bit version ever since there has been one to use which is as far back as 2004.

               I've been advised by someone else to look at 10.04 as well. Given the ancient hardware I am installing this on, not having to upgrade sounds like a good solution.

Are you using a desktop distro or server distro? I've also been advised to go the server route, but don't know what benefit I'd get out of server over desktop.

               I'm using 11.10, just upgraded, and it seems to be less buggy than natty narwhale to me. Especially the Unity interface bugs got pretty much cleared out.

I'm still glad that i switched (did this after windows crashed the second time on me taking the data on both hds with it into nirvana), but it still gets on my nerves that I have to consult a forum for every hardware installation and most software installations. Well you cant have it all '<img'>

Btw I'm a noob with Ubuntu as you probably already guessed, and still struggling with the command lines. This said, it shows that your installation instructions are very good, otherwise I wouldnt have been able to use it. You only got me confused for a sec with the path for the cd rom drive, it was /media/NW_DIAMOND for me. So, big big thanks to you for your help!

Happy hunting, Maks.

               @henesua

The server version of the LTS Ubuntu editions gets 5 years support, the desktop LTS version only 3 years, the standard versions (like maverick 10.10, natty 11.04, oneric 11.10) get 18 months of support, i.e., that is the amount of time Ubuntu makes sure that software packages are updated with bug fixes (not newer versions) for security reasons. The server distro, AFAIK does not contain the packages for desktop environment like gnome or kde, so you have to take them from the desktop edition that only gives you 3 years of security support. The kernel images of the server editions are geared to server use, not responsiveness for interactive (mouse, keyboard) use. So if you want a desktop system, you are IMO better off with the desktop editions.

               @Skildron.

Thank you for the information.

I want to use this with NWNX and NWServer, so I am unclear whether I will need the Server version or if the Desktop version is adequate. I would prefer the desktop version since I am just getting used to the Linux way of doing things, but if the server version is necessary for running NWNX I'll be happy to use it.

[Edit]
Nevermind... it looks like ithe main difference is a leaner kernel, but that you can run anything on either. As soon as I figure out network install, I'll be on my way.

I'm working with 10.10 so far on PPC. Looks great.

Not sure if you saw my reply on nwnx.org.

When you say PPC, do you mean pre-Intel Mac architecture with a PowerPC CPU?  If you can get an nwserver running on that at all then more power to you.  Linux NWNX assumes an Intel CPU and patches the running binary with Intel machine code, something that won't work very well on PPC.  Unless you're specifically doing this to attempt a PPC port, I'd look for a cheap x86 machine.

               PlasmaJohn... I did not see your post over there, but I'll look later today. Yes, I meant a PPC chip. So... I suppose NWNX won't work for me - for now. I don't have a spare Intel machine to do this with, and I don't intend to buy yet another computer so unless I decide to repurpose my intel machine NWNX is out for me. Nevertheless I'll carry on with Linux, and if I get spare time I'll look at doing a port. That would be a steep learning curve, but possible. Just a matter of spending the time if I can find it.
