NWN1 - Retrieving CD Keys
« on: January 13, 2012, 03:37:55 am »

Is there any way to retrieve my CD Keys from the website? I have LONG since lost my original manuals, but my copies of the Premium Modules are keyed to those CD Keys.

If you still have the game installed, you can get the installation keys from your .ini file.

Otherwise, your manual is the next best thing - which you LONG lost - so buying another copy of Neverwinter Nights would be the only solution at this point.

Its amazing the number of times this comes up with all of the multitude of prior instances littering the forums.

GoG for $10 is your best bet.

@KittyburgerMN: It looks like Bioware/EA set up a simplified server that hands out the premium mod decryption keys to anybody regardless of which keys they're using.

Like FP already suggested, the nwncdkey.ini contains what you need.

As long as NWN had been installed on your current machine at some time you can use the System Restore to access files that may have been removed in the past.  Then just restore back to your current config once you have copied the codes.

If it was only installed on another machine which you no longer have access to, then purchase a digital copy on-line.  (They run seasonal promos quite often and I have seen prices as low as 5.95 USD for the Diamond version already.)

While I would never condone the acquisition of cdkeys from certain websites illegally etc,
It is important to note that the authentication server being down for a good while now, means that any cdkey will work with online play.

I will admit - I have my old CDKeys on my desktop, and the other night, I wanted to install on my laptop,
Ordinarily, I woulda gone into my bioware account, and got the CDKey from there - alas, cant do that anymore...
And my desktop was turned off, and it was upstairs, and I couldnt be arsed waiting for it to start up...
So, in the short term, I 'acquired' a cdkey just to get me past the installation, and to play on my server.

Morally, this is wrong, if you dont own the game legally.

I dont feel it is morally wrong to do such a thing, if you can honestly say you own a legal copy of the game. Infact, being totally honest, I think everyone is entitled to do whatever they need to do, to ensure they dont need to go and fork out more money to accomodate biowares blunder.

Buying another copy of a game that you already own is not an ideal solution, heck its not even an ideal work around, and its wrong of Bioware to expect it of their consumers, when people have bought the game legally already.

Its the equivelant of buying a Graphics Card from nVidia, nVidia taking it off you, and then asking you to pay for another one.

(Does anyone remember what the old Legacy website used to say on the CDKey page?
I believe it had a paragraph that said something along the lines of 'You can keep your cdkeys stored safely here' - Yeah Right?!)

1.
You actually kind of are saying illegal keys are OK (certainly attempting to rationalize it).

2.
BioWare doesn't expect anyone to buy another copy.  Simply, if you've not kept track of your own keys, that course of action is your best best.

Your graphics card analogy is false in the extreme.  A more accurate one would be; "... the equivelant of buying a Graphics Card from nVidia, misplacing the card, and then expecting nVidia to give you another card for free "just because"".

3.
I can't remember what the exact verbiage was, but it certainly wasn't what you say it was.  If anything, it was specifically indicated that the on-line storage option was made available for convenience (and to allow access to specific NWN forums which at one time required a cd key to post in), but under no circumstance should anyone think that it was a substitute for assuming personal responsibility to keep track of cd keys issued to you as a customer.

Nice try though. :innocent:

Interesting.  Never realized the term "troll" could be interpreted as "100% accurate".
Whatever.
Be as cavalier tossing  terms around as you like if that makes sense in your world.

Just think...

It's amazing that all those NWN owners who either never knew about the Bioware registry site or simply couldn't be bothered using it were actually able to secure their keys without issue and are happily playing the game today after the so-called hak attack.  Must have been a case of divine intervention.

Just for future reference for all owners of ANY video games requiring the authorization codes that were furnished with the original product:  Should one decide to treat the codes as expendible commodities and take no PERSONAL responsibility to protect them themselves, they still make handy coasters or mini-fizbies, though very expensive ones.

The game is 6 years old.  Whatever the verbiage on the site at the time, I (along with a considerable amount of others) was under the impression that my keys were safe there.  This morning I got an ad for NWN Complete, and thought, "I have NWN diamond and never played much.  Sounds like fun, let me dig that out." Lo and behold, I cannot locate the owners manual (although, I found the original disk.  I know.  Weird).  No problem, I registered my game with Bioware and saved the keys online.

If I hadn't been led to believe that my keys were safe and retrievable, I damn well would have done a better job of securing the owners manual (as I have for countless other games).  Is it asking too much that there be some mechanism for people who PURCHASED the game legitimately to be able to actually use the game they bought?

If you stored important documents in a safe deposit box, and the bank lost them, they would replace them or re-compensate you for your loss right?  I just want to play a 6 year old game for a few hours.  I certainly don't need a sermon on ethics.

and to address the video card analogy.  It's more like you bought a card and registered your purchase with nVidia, and later lost your receipt, and then requested in warranty service.  At that time nVidia tells you, "Sorry, our site was hacked and we lost your original purchase info.  Didn't you keep your receipt (even though we collected that info from you and, at the very least, implied that was good enough)?

OK well, we can all spend time arguing on the internet and look like retards or everyone who thinks BioWare should give them free keys "just because" can see how far they get, while the rest of us can forget about trying to gently help them to see the sky is blue when they swear it is pink.

This game is a few months under 10 years old.  Nowhere was anyone ever told, nor was it implied that the on-line key storage was to be relied upon until the end of time (in fact if any of you were around 'back then' you would remember that BioWare employees took great efforts to make it clear that the on-line storage was not a suitable substitute for keeping your indvidual product keys safe).

The game is 10 years old - if you really want to play it, drop $10 on it at GoG.  You can spend that on a ****ty lunch at McDonalds that has you running to the crapper in 45 minutes.  Or you can buy a 10 year old game that has defied the passage of time and the advancement of technology to still be possibly the greatest game ever made.

Or you can complain.

The choice is yours and only you can make it.

Thats a nice way of saying
'Disagree with me, and your a retard'

Bioware did encourage the use of their online storage of CDKeys -Fact
They did not keep their systems secure - Fact
They then took away access to those assets that we entrusted to them. - Fact

Am I going to buy another copy of the game. Just to avoid being called a Pirate by you? LMAO - NO

My CD's are legal, my Instruction Books authentic, my CDBoxes - Misplaced.... (cdkey was printed on inside)
I will do anything, and everything, within my power, to get back into a game that I am LEGALLY entitled to play.

Im sick and tired of the whole
'Its only 10$ on GOG - Blah Blah Blah'
If its only 10$ on GOG, then go and buy a copy for everyone on the forums who had their cdkeys taken/locked away.

When I first got my NWN Games, I was 16, didnt have a job, was just out of school, and my PC was a cheap piece of trash. I saved up for like 3 months to get the game and two addons, and had a frame rate of like 5fps on my ****ty pc.

I can afford to buy 100 copies of the game a go now, I just choose not to, out of principle.

Has Bioware officially said what we are to do regarding CDKeys?
Are they directing us to websites to spend hard earned cash on another cdkey, or are they remaining silent on the subject matter?
