Can't Install NWN Complete
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:36:52 am »

Bought NWN Complete today from Gamestop.  30 bucks? Heck yeah!''
Got it home, and neither of the discs read.  '<img'>
I put Disc 1 in the tray, close it, and nothing happens.  So I go to Computer, and double click on DVD RW Drive D, and it pops the tray and says "Insert Disc".
I put Baldur's Gate TOB in, and it reads just fine. So I go back to Disc 1 of NWN Complete. No luck.
Tried using Run d:\\setup  or setup.exe  and it takes me to the Computer folder, pops the tray and says Insert Disc.
Put in Disc 2, and same thing. Doesn't run. Double clicking the drive pops the tray open.

I'm on a 1 year old Asus, with Windows 7 HP.
I'm leaning toward busted disc, but could it be something else? Like a compatability issue with Win7?

Is it possible, I wonder, that there was some kind of manufacturing defect and a batch of crap discs were pressed?

Can you use Windows Explorer to see what files are on the discs?

How would I go about doing that? I tried right clicking the D drive, but it only brings up open/open in new window/properties/format(does nothing)/eject and a few other things.

Edit: I don't think I can. Whenever I doubleclick the dvd drive is when it pops the tray and says "Insert Disc"

Use explorer.exe to bring up your file list, Right click on the drive and select "Explore" from the dozen or so options available on the drop-dwon menu.  Don't double-click unless you want a program to execute like the one that tries to spin your DVD disc.

So I went to Start, accessories, run. explorer.exe   and all that does is bring up "Computer".  There's no option I can see to bring up that old explore option that lets me poke around inside the DVD drive.
Options in Windows 7 are Open/open new window (both of which open the tray, not the files),  eject, properties (don't see anything useful), burn, and copy.

I own, but avoid using, Windows 7, so I've forgotten.  The correct version of Explorer is still in it, by "My Computer" can also allow you to navigate to the DVD contents if you need a manual for Windows 7 and never obtained one.  In spite of its insulting-sounding title, the yellow-jacket books with "for Dummies" on them are actually decent references to keep on hand.  Get the one about Windows 7 and put it somewhere near the computer.

The edit, quote, and standard composition window options are broken when I use FireFox since yesterday.  My second sentence, for whatever reason, has a half-typo, half mis-placed word, where I wanted to use "but".

The original file-management program, Windows Explorer, is still in Windows 7, BUT "My Computer" is equally able to allow you to navigate to where you can view and work with the DVD contents . . .

Muahaha. The Idiots guide might not be a bad idea. Asked this Q somewhere else, and someone randomly suggested checking to make sure it could read DVDs at all.  So obvious I'd never considered my laptop couldn't. But apparently, it can't. Guess it's back to amazon!

NWN did come on cds originally IIRC... but I have to believe it would be almost impossible to find that version still for sale.

You could buy NWN from GoG for $10 and NWN2 from Steam for $20 (I think).

One or the other of the expansions, probably HotU, on CD, came with a cute cardboard disk holder for all five or all six, however many there were in total with both of the major add-ons.  Diamond Edition was just the singleton DVD.

I also bought the NWN complete. It says that Neverwinter Nights 1 has the 1.69 update. Well sorta, It needs the Critical rebuild 1.69 and then the cloak hacks and other things start working right. I have played NWN 1 since 4-3-03. Have all expantions, Diamond Edition and Neverwinter Nights Complete. I just got the NWN 1 fixed (in the comlete set)so I could put all the other mods in that need CEP & 1.69 critical rebuild. Am Learning about NWN 2, another forum. I hope this helps a little also in getting the complete set working. 'Posted
