Game hangs on startup (Win 7 64bit)
« on: December 15, 2011, 04:45:31 pm »

Starting a new post, as it is now quite aparent that the issue I'm having is different from the topic that I'd previously posted in here: http://social.biowar...-8690214-1.html

The story thus far. I have purchased the Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (With Kingmaker) from Gog.com
Installation runs fine, but the game hangs on startup.
Here is my initial post about the issue:

itsmeian17 wrote...

I'm experiencing the same issue, and
after about 6 hours of work, I'm no closer to getting the game running.
Game was purchased through GOG games. I'm going to jsut copy/paste my
post form their forum.

Just downloaded and installed, still encountering this issue
" Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Inspiron 518
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.5GHz
Memory: 6144MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 6142MB RAM
Page File: 2175MB used, 10107MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series
Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x9490)"

Drivers have been updated, I've sought out and installed
the older directX 9 drivers (as I read somewhere that DX11 might not contain everything)
I've
run the critical patch (and redownloaded it twice), with and without
kingmaker, and even uninstalled .NET 4.0 as I read that it can cause
compatibility issues.

I've changed safemovie to 1, tried
compatibility modes on all the files to XP service pack 2 AND 3.
Installed inside the Program files (x86) folder, and direct to a new
folder on the C: drive. Tried different framerate and resolution
settings in the config. Also opened the toolset first, thinking it might
get something working correctly.
Admin access, and disabling visual themes and those other settings.
Been a busy 4 hours.
Once
play is hit, (or nwnmain.exe is used), the process starts, but hangs at
about 15.7k memory, and sits there, slowly sucking up more (after about
10 minutes, it's up to 16,432k)

Anyone know what the next step is?

(just tried disabling UAC, still no luck)

Event viewer has told me this (yup,
tried in compatability modes for SP 2 & 3, in case one made a
difference, tried launching it from literally every executable file in
the folder):

Second time around (actually it's the 5th try starting from scratch, but you get the idea), I followed these steps exactly (copied fromt he previous topic).

I'm starting to notice something a lot of these folks have in common - ATI cards...

As for installing to ProgramFiles(x86) - no, no, no!!! The GOG installer is fraked.

1. UAC MUST BE DISABLED BEFORE INSTALLING NWN.

2. The game MUST be installed to C:\\NeverwinterNightsNWN. If you install the game anywhere else it seems to produce a laundry list of errors.

3.
If you have to move the files there you also have to manually update
the registry keys to point to the new location or the critical rebuild
might not work correctly. Most often the critical rebuild will abort,
other times its does a partial update and really messes up the game.

4. The GOG version tells you its 1.69. The GOG version is CORRUPT. You MUST run the critical rebuild.

5. Make sure you are setting compatibility mode on the .exe files, NOT the shortcuts. Only setup compatibility mode for nwnmain.exe, nwserver.exe, and nwtoolset.exe. Do NOT set compatibility mode for nwupdater.exe or nwconfig.exe.

6.
The first time you run the game it should run the config utililty. This
utility is broken for newer versions of Windows. After it runs you MUST go into to your .ini file and manually adjust some of the settings to reflect your hardware configuration and OS.

I
have installed the NWN on several computers (6 of my own and an equal
number belonging to friends) using my original disks, GOG Diamond, and
Impulse Diamond editions. In all cases the above method was proven to
make the game work in 100% of the installations.

Given the very
nature of UAC anything you do in the venue of installing pre-Vista/Win 7
software or drivers (including Direct X 9.0c and OpenGL) risks being
corrupted by this "security feature". The installers for such software
and driver were designed to hve full access to your system. Under UAC,
even when it claims to grant the level of access these installers
require, it does NOT. Hence the reason for this message from Microsoft's own settings utility for UAC...

This is the original text from the setting window for UAC:

Not
recommended. Choose this only if you need to use programs that are not
certified for Windows 7 because they do not support User Account Control

The first thing I do with any computer, BEFORE installing anything is DISABLE UAC. I even disable before the first update gets installed.

Sadly, I'm still having the same problem, except that I'm actually not seeing any errors in event viewer.
Currently, I'm trying to figure out if it is a graphics card issue, but I'm feeling a bit over my head in terms of what steps to take next.

Typically, the newer ATI/AMD systems have been installing and recommending Catalyst for upgrades.

So which version do you have installed?  Please be specific because driver versions can result in vastly different performance for very old games that depend on OpenGL to render effectively. It may actually be beneficial to install an older version depending on how that driver addresses OpenGL.

For example, for my ancient flickering Radeon x300 I have an equally-dated driver 8.263.0.0 installed. I have never had a problem with NWN except before patching... one area of one of the campaigns performed poorly but v1.69 magically fixed that.

I have the Open GL extension viewer, but I'm not sure how to export the info from that.

Copy/paste gives me this (an exerpt from the report)
OpenGL driver version check (Current: 3.3.11318 Core Profile Forward-Compatible Context, Latest known: 8.920.0.0):
Outdated version of display drivers detected
According the database, you are might be not using the latest version of display drivers for your video card.

No ICD registry entry
The current OpenGL driver doesn't expose the SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows (NT)/CurrentVersion/OpenGLDrivers registry entry. Unable to detect the driver version, driver revision name and filename.

Few texture units found
This may slow down some applications using fragment programs or extensive texture mapping.

Extension verification:
GL_AMDX_name_gen_delete was not found, but is available in driver version 3.2.9704 Forward-Compatible Co
GL_EXT_texture_buffer_object_rgb32 was not found, but is available in driver version 3.2.9704 Forward-Compatible Co

I'll summarize the all the other posts from us going back and forth trying to find a solution in the other thread:
Lightfoot figured out that it's almost definitely your graphics driver and suggested that you roll your driver back to an older version. Not every version of graphics driver works with NWN and a lot of people have fixed crash related issues with older graphics drivers.
I found several links to people who had repaired similar errors by removing other devices from their PC and re-booting so that the other drivers wouldn't be sharing the same memory address and causing issues. Several others had that same issue with random software because of their Antivirus software.
My advice is to first try unplugging everything from your computer except the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Remove microphones, printers, web cams, tablets, etc. Then re-boot and try NWN.
If that doesn't work, you have two choices. Uninstall your antivirus to see if that helps, or roll back your drivers to an older version.

Details and links can be found in the previous thread.

EDIT: Or update if they are out of date

Just a shot in the dark here Ian, but you wouldn't by any chance have RealTek 7:1 onbaord HD audio on that rig?

I don't think so. The computer originally came with dell, but my first step when I got it was to do a clean Win 7 install. That process detected and installed whatever sound drivers it needed. DXDiag currently tells me this
Description: Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High Definition Audio Device)
 Default Sound Playback: No
 Default Voice Playback: No
            Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0888&SUBSYS_1028027D&REV_1000
        Manufacturer ID: 1
             Product ID: 65535
                   Type: WDM
            Driver Name: HdAudio.sys
         Driver Version: 6.01.7601.17514 (English)
      Driver Attributes: Final Retail
            WHQL Logo'd: Yes
          Date and Size: 11/20/2010 05:44:23, 350208 bytes
            Other Files:
        Driver Provider: Microsoft
         HW Accel Level: Basic
              Cap Flags: 0xF1F
    Min/Max Sample Rate: 100, 200000
Static/Strm HW Mix Bufs: 1, 0
 Static/Strm HW 3D Bufs: 0, 0
              HW Memory: 0
       Voice Management: No
 EAX™ 2.0 Listen/Src: No, No
   I3DL2™ Listen/Src: No, No
Sensaura™ ZoomFX™: No

Attempts to install realtek sound drivers from the dell site actually fail at the last step, with no reason given, other than to state that it failed. (UAC still off, ran install in admin mode)
I'm concerned that mucking around with the drivers in the clumsy way that I am is going to break something else.
Oh, and I did try running, with all extras for my computer unplugged, no luck, though I'd never realized how much easier it is to figure out what cable goes where, when your USB cables have colored lights in them. Well worth the $5 for 4

I assume by "came with Dell" you meant the computer is a Dell? I do a clean install of windows as well whenever I buy a retail computer. What model Dell are you using?

Sorry, I'd meant to say "Came with Vista" That's what I get for trying to respond while making lunch.
It is a Dell Inspiron 518. Bought it refurbished from  Weeklycloseouts.com The only part I've added is the graphics card, (and I'm not sure about what he deal is with the ram),

But yeah, ESPECIALLY with Dell computers, the first thing I do is wipe it, and do a clean OS install.

Ok I have an Inspirion 580. The 518 is almost identical. You should have Intel 7:1 Integrated HD audio. Not sure why the Dell site has you downloading a RealTek driver. Try this site...

http://www.intel.com...support/detect/

Both Intel and RealTek had issues with Win 7 early on. I'll wager that you have an older driver installed that doesn't fully support Win 7 or a generic audio driver. In either case you prob wouldn't experience issues until you went to play some older games.

Well, that link DID find an out of date driver (Intel chip set, which I did download and install), but it did not see anything even remotely sound related. I searched around the site and was able to find a driver for an Integrated HD audio. I installed that, thinking even if it was wrong, it might get windows to notice and attempt to grab the right one. Still no luck.

On a whim, I just disabled my display adapter entirely, and attempted to run the game. I knew resolution would be unplayable, but I figured if it ran, then we might have narrowed down the problem. No luck though, Still hangs at about 15.7k memory usage. Weird thing is that I can't find any related errors in the Event Viewer anymore.

I have also tried the driver rollback through Windows, but with no luck.

               I'm out of ideas.
I had the almost the exact same issue once, where the NWN server would freeze and begin eating all of my memory. I figured out that it was because of a NWNX plugin that I was using and I had configured it incorrectly in the NWNX.ini file.

That, however, doesn't help you. If I understand you correctly, this is an entirely fresh install and you haven't added any plugins or altered your ini's beyond the few tweaks you've made to test fixes.

I still believe that the issue is related to some other software that you have installed on your system. That software is trying to access and use the same resources as NWN and NWN loses.
Unfortunately, I don't have any good way of figuring out what software that might be.
If you are really desperate, you might try uninstalling your antivirus to see if that's it... But that can be a headache sometimes.

Grasping at straws here, but what's your memory usage look like when the machine is doing nothing? If its high this would be an indicative symptom of Wyldhunt's software theory. Furthermore, if you go into task manager you might be able to see the culprit right off.

Like Wyldhunt, I'm really baffled here. The only thing I've heard of that produced a similar memory leak was a friend of mine who had caught a nasty virus that actually embedded itself into windows. However, his computer was just about nonfunctional since the virus was trying to dump his hdd via his internet connection.

I had the same problem Ian, ATI/AMD video card (HD 3600 series), and downgrading the drivers did the trick. Uninstall current drivers and install 10.10 version, it should work. Nothing else worked.

In my experience of installing on Vista /win7/xp.
I would also seem to think its something with your video.

I just know with vista and win7 the game generally installs easily by turning off UAC and somtimes running the patch 2 times ,then setting to compatibility mode.If that doesnt work it's usually hardware.

That being said I have not tried to install from GOG.Is there an option to install directly to C:/ instead of Program Files(x86) when you download?
