Same thing happened to me, though it had nothing to do with the master server. After a period of time, the PW itself removes characters that have remained idle too long. It's just a matter of housekeeping and the PW USUALLY publishes the maximum period of idleness allowed before removal. They have limited room on their server machines so it makes no sense to retain information that isn't being used. But who knows? Maybe Avlis has an infinite storage capacity and still has your characters on file? It's worth a shot.

BTW, it's probably not a bad idea to inquire on whether Avlis has updated its haks. It is quite possible that the character(s) you developed years ago and the equipment you found may be illegal and/or corrupted within the current version. Updating PW servers is a common practice they use to keep the environment vigorous and fresh for those who have remained regulars.
