Black Screen, Cursor Visible, No Sound, Windows XP
« on: August 05, 2011, 09:05:52 am »

Game Version: NWN1, SoU, HotU, V1.69
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital: Retail CD
Processor Manufacturer: AMD
Processor Type: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
Operating System / Service Pack: Windows XP v5.1 build 2600 Service Pack 3
System RAM: 960 MB
Video Card Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Video Card Model: NVIDIA GeForce 7025 / NVIDIA nForce 630a
Video Card RAM: 256 megs
Video Card Driver Version: 275.33

Hey, hopefully the above info is sufficient to help with the problem but if not just let me know.

So my problem is this, I start up NWN and it immediately goes to a black screen (no movies), I can see the nwn hand cursor and move it around, however there is no sound, and clicking where the menu buttons would be does nothing. Usually after a few minutes it crashes and a windows message pops up saying that it encountered a problem and had to be closed and asks if I want to send a report.

Now I have tried running in windowed mode, editing the .ini to safemovie=1, I've tried editing the .ini and disabling sound, I have ran the critical update patch HotU version, I've tried starting up the toolset and clicking test module, I use the nwnmain to start it, tried running in every compatibility mode I have. Pretty much tried everything I can think of I updated my video card drivers. I'm really at a loss with this, NWN 2 starts up fine, KOTOR 1 starts up fine.

Basically I'm just looking for any help because I really wanted to play some NWN again and it's seemingly impossible, anyways I hope I put in everything I meant to, its a little late here, so please any suggestions at all would be appreciated.

AFAIK, that particular onboard chipset video chip just isn't going to be good enough for NWN without going way back to old drivers for it.

Hm, thanks for the reply I was thinking it might be the drivers, and I'm willing to roll them back as far as necessary if that would solve the problem.

It's weird that the drivers would run NWN2 and KOTOR fine, but not NWN1.

If anyone knows what drivers I should try that would be helpful, or any other solutions thanks again.

Hey so I just tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, and heres where the problem seems to be, just NWN no expansions works fine, NWN and SoU expansion works fine, as soon as I install HotU the black screen only cursor problem pops up, anyone heard of this before or have any ideas?

Let's put it this way, not back in the game's own era, no.  With modern OSes and video hardware particularly, who knows any more?

Hm the game ran fine on this machine back when it first came out, but either way I don't think the problem is with the drivers because like the other post says, the game plays fine with NWN original and SoU, it's only when I install HotU that the problem crops up, which is strange I thought.

Do you have any ideas on why that might be?

Hey thats actually somewhat different then my problem I cannot see the beginning credits or here any music and it only occurs after installing the HotU expansion, but I looked around a bit and you can try a few things that might work, depends if your running windows XP or windows 7.

First make sure your video card drivers are upto date, and your booting from nwnmain.exe, if your using windows 7 make sure the game is set to run in compatibility mode for XP and make sure its set to run as admin.

If those don't work you can try a couple other things, just clicking where the menu buttons should be(frantically click around) has worked for some people, running in 256 color has worked for some people, or booting straight to a module has worked for some people.

There are more fixes but I can seem to find the website that had them all at the moment, there doesn't seem to be many responses to my post and I'm guessing its the same with others, so if none of those work for you or you have any questions about it feel free to post back in here and I'll try and help you out. Maybe one of us will be able to play at least .'<img'>

....now anyone have any Idea on why I have while running XP, no sound, no intro movies, and a black screen with a hand cursor, after installing HotU, I've tried re-installing twice and everything is fine and the game works fine until I install HotU.
