The problem is that before AMD's acquisition of ATI, ATI had scrapped the support of the older OpenGL 1.x from the drivers starting with the ATI Radeon 2xxx series of which began the support of DirectX10 and newer version of OpenGL 2.x
Shiny water has been broken ever since. Although numerous complaints to ATI at the time, the issue as remained unresolved and I guess after AMD's acquisition the reports of the issue has been lost in time.
Which is why that on my second PC, I purchased a NVidia 9800GT which does not suffer this issue nor any other issue as far as I can tell with the last driver that were meant for the 9xxx series before the new breeds of cards came along.
When my ATI Radeon 4870 dies, I'm going for NVidia. I'm aware that NVidia is currently suffering some driver issues with NWN with newer DirectX11 cards, however they communicated acknowledgment of the issues and are reporting that they are working on them and apperently they are suppose to have a fix introduced on the next driver release. This much can't be said of AMD by a long shot.
So on that note... it sucks to be us
