Game runs Choppy when characters run [Solved]
« on: July 08, 2011, 07:50:07 pm »

I installed this game on the computer after I reinstalled XP. Once I went in to play some multiplayer, I found out that there were some serious problems. Anytime my character, NPCs, and others run around, the game suddenly becomes choppy. This seems to happen when they are mid stride. Reinstalling NWN didn't help at all, so then I looked around for a reason. I realized that I had upgraded the computer CPU to a dual core. Setting CPU affinity in NWN, both in nwnplayer.ini and through the task manager to run on one core did nothing to help, in fact it was already at the correct setting.

I am wondering what I can try to attempt to fix this. It's notable that newer games with higher system requirements work fine. I downloaded the latest video drivers as well.

My system specs are as follows.

Game Version: NWN 1 1.69 +HOTU, SOU, and CEP 2.4
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital: Retail DVD
Processor Manufacturer: AMD
Processor Type: Athlon II x2 245
Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz Dual Core
Operating System / Service Pack: Windows XP Service Pack 3
System RAM: 2 gigs
Video Card Manufacturer: ATI
Video Card Model: Radeon x1900
Video Card RAM: 256 megs
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst 8.593.100.0
Sound Card Manufacturer: Realtek
Sound Card Model: Realtek HD Audio
Sound Card Driver Version: 5.10.0.6383
CD/ROM Type: DVD

Have you already done the usual tests? Lowering all of the graphical options in-game and also from the ATI Catalyst Control Center? Your card is a little old, so maybe it is an issue with framerates, which usually turns ugly because of the 256 megs.

Make the tests with an empty override folder and no haks. Plain vanilla Neverwinter Nights, and see what happens.

Try disabling all of the sound settings. I seem to remember an almost identical problem being sound-related, not graphics related.

I went into sound settings, and messed with it. Turning on Hardware sound fixed it. Thanks for the help, I would have never thought of changing the sound settings...
