Tried this with all my settings down low for nwn graphics. Tried this with compatibility mode for xp, and tried it with running in 255 colors. Crash happens about 3/10ths into loading the first area.

The be blunt, you're not going to get far with the onboard "Nvidia 630" chipset graphics

I strongly suggest you get either a "ZOTAC Nvidia 9800GT" (No PCIe Power connector needed) if
your budget permits it or a "ZOTAC Nvidia 9500GT" if on a tight budget.

That will definitly help with your issues.

My appologies if I can't come up with a better solution.

Jenna, your issue probably has nothing to do with your GPU. AMD boards do not get along with Win 7 SP1. I was running NWN fine on my old PC then I upgraded to Win 7 SP1. Slowly over the course of a month the computer degenerated to the point where the HDD and RAM was damaged beyond repair. I had to buy a new system.

On the advice of a friend, I replaced the HDD and RAM and installed WIN XP on the old system. It works again.

AMD is junk. ASUS is junk. I was running a Phenom II X4 on a M478T-E Asus Board with an AMD GPU - all of which was "specially engineered to run under Win 7." What a load of crap. Search the web, cross-referencing AMD with Win 7 SP1. You will find thousands of people posting threads and blogs about how their ASUS/AMD pc is now junk after upgrading to Win 7 SP1.

I'd say Win 7 SP1 is junk, BUT my new Intel PC with nVidia GPU runs beautiful, as do my other 3 desktops and laptop - all intel with nVidia GPUs.

My advice, take that AMD-based piece of junk back whereever you bought it and get an intel-based board with an nVidia GPU. You also don't need a fancy video card to run NWN, it was designed to run on a 128 MB card - any modern onboard GPU is at least 256 MB and most are 512 MB.

               I don't think I can return it. '<img'>

I knda figured I might have to add a specific vid card... is there a more comprehensive list of cards that work with nwn?

You may safely ignore the Intel Fanboy's ravings against the better company's products.  The readme file in the game did list those video cards that worked back in 2002 when the game was brand new, but very few cards that old are still anywhere you can find them, other than eBay.

ATI hitched its wagon to Direct3D early on, and allowed OpenGL functions to get shortchanged because of the lack of games requiring OpenGL cards.  NWN1, however, is old enough that the future of the two (Direct3D versus OpenGL) wasn't yet clear.

The game wants more Open GL than Radeons maintained after their X1n00 generation six years ago, and more than nVIDIA maintained after three years ago.  You can still find relatively old Geforces such as 9800 GTs to purchase new, but just don't use recent drivers with that age card, at least not for NWN1.

Er... so none of the cards at say, best buy or comp usa will work, either? Something that needs to be specifically ordered online? I have no patience, I admint.

Thanks for declaring this in Jenna's thread, Gorath.  I copy few to PnP but this is one.

This has been a serious concern of mine as my fully-compatible-but-ancient Radeon card won't last much longer and determining the subsitute will be an adventure.  Maybe it would be prudent if I bought a compatible one (like the 9800 GTS) now before I get stuck in OpenGL purgatory.

There used to be detailed discussions of various older cards good to use with NWN one time *ahem*, so those neurotic NWNers, like me, who do not like having the rug pulled out under, will be collecting these sorts of opinions/references.

I dunno about buying old cards.  Most people pretty successfully run newer cards with nwn these days, though it certainly takes some playing around.  As for the win 7/asus debate I can't comment, I hadn't heard that one before, I run a nVidia motherboard and card.

I don't know what's available quickly, but usually tiger direct or newegg can get something to you within days.  Currently there are fixes even for the newest Nvidia cards, which do not always work.  The ATI series HD cards seem to work as well depending on driver, and ATI catalyst tweaks. (Usually adjusting catalyst AI and advanced AA settings).

If you have questions on a specific piece of hardware post away and hopefully someone can advise you.

You can run NWN on newer cards. I use an nVidia GT 240 with 1 GB RAM. I've run it on 8500 GTs, 8600 GTs, and several other cards - I upgrade PCs just about every year. I have the latest drivers installed.

Well my laptop had no issue running it at all, on win 7... and it's about a year old. I don't recall the board/vid card though and it's in need of a windows reinstall. All my computers broke in the same ten day period. FML.
