Looking for information on how to setup and run a server.
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:37:13 pm »

I posted this under PW's as well, but I thought I would try here. I am looking for some sort of guide on:
a) how to host a server using your PC.
'B)' how to set up and run a server using a hosting service.

I have found a fair amount of info on a), however not much on 'B)'. Any info or links you all could provide would be appreciated.

               Have you read this one?

Are you intending to use a Win, Linux or Mac server?

edit: The link should take you to http://nwn.bioware.c...350798&forum=56 on the old legacy forum.

Perhaps you might need an account to access the Server Admin boards?  Dunno since I already have one.  In any case, there is a huge knowledge base there if you have not checked it out yet.

edit #2:  Hmm... in the time it took for a reply apparently the legacy addresses no longer work.  Very sad if that is the case. '<img'>

That link seems to just lead to the bioware homepage...

And it would be windows in either case (PC hosted, or using a server.)

Looks like you may have missed your chance for access to a lot of well-prepared information.  Apparently, between the time I posted the link and your reply, the Bioware legacy forum were either closed permanently or are being restructured somewhere (though I wouldn't be holding my breath for the latter alternative).

Regardless, this topic is better suited for the PW forum since it has nothing to do with solving technical problems related to the game itself.  Have patience.  There are few of us left but those who remain are quite dedicated to the craft of NWN.

you just need to go to nwn directory and run the exe with "server" in it. once you run it you pick a module or game save from the drop down menu and hit start. For it to work online you need to forward port 5121 on your router.

Yes thank you, that part I understand, and in fact I have installed nwnx, which seems to be working, except I am having trouble setting up a database. Regardless though, hosting a pw from my PC is not really a viable long term solution, so what I am looking for is how to set it up if I were to purchase space with a server host.

I have used different hosts but I have been with this Virtual machine the longest. There are many Virtual Machine hosts.
You have pretty much full control from what I can tell.
I use Ubuntu linux 10.04 server 64bit. I just use 32 lib for the game.

Any decent hosting services out there for NWN beside amazon?  Been running on an EC2 server, but the cost is pretty hefty, wondering if there is something that is perhaps a little cheaper out there that might be a good choice.

Currently I am using ADHosting aka ad-sl.com. They have been fantastic trying to get me up and running. I also looked at rack space, however for a newb like me, adhosting has been much more friendly tech support wise. They set up a MySQL database for me (which my mod required) before I even signed up, and their support has been fantastic. Honestly it must be a labor of love, because I don't know how they will turn a profit unless I stick with them for quite a while, given their rates vs the amount of time they have been spending with a newb like me on the phone and via e-mails getting everything set up...

You'd be surprised, and Amazon EC2 is pretty much overkill for a NWN instance. Most of these places can install a basic LAMP stack in short order. mySQL is pretty much a staple these days for any company doing hosting. So you take your basic LAMP server, add NWN, add the plugins, and you are pretty much laughing.

Thanks for the suggestions though I will look at both of those options, see what sort of flexibility they provide.

EDIT:  Ouch, $1.50 per slot.  That's a little rich for my blood, with a 70 player server we're looking at 105 a month.

Right, maybe not getting ripped off as bad as I thought, but it's still pretty expensive.  Anyone have any cheaper solutions for hosted service?

Alright I've been looking into other various hosting options and we're getting a pretty good deal.

I started with Ad-hosting, and they want $1.50/month for each player slot. With 70 player slots that is $105.00 a month.

So then I started looking at Rackspace. For a cloud server with linux that has 4,096MB RAM and 160GB Disk, you pay 24 cents an hour plus you pay for incomming and outgoing bandwidth. Monthly I figured it would come to about $200.

I'll continue to research other solutions, but if anyone has any cost effective linux solutions let me know.

Just as an FYI on the Amazon pricing:
Reserved instance price yearly: $455
Price per hour: 8 cents. (~730 hours a month @ 8cents an hour = $58.40. $58.40 x 12 moths = $700.80)
Grand total yearly is $1155.80

you do you could run your own for free using your own connection and hardware right?

i personally would not pay close to $1160 dollars for a server of any type unless it was literally a server computer i would physically own as mine not some companies.

then again ive always done my own servers for everything for free on my internet i use www.no-ip.com for free for the url instead of handing out my ip address.

Oh I'd love to run my own server, but I move frequently.  I could probably host comfortably for 1200 a year, half for connection and half for a server box.

At any rate I'm researching this not for myself, I simply donate technical expertise on linux and scripting.  I'm simply seeing what's out there, cause I think 1200 a year is too much myself.

Well with ad-sl.com I am starting off with the min 16 slot server, which comes out to 24$/mo, or 288 a year, which about my budjet for the moment.

Speaking of which though, I am experiencing some technical difficulties, but I am pretty sure it is due to the mod, and not the hosting. I am going to start a new thread regarding it though, to see if anyone here has any ideas...
