Failure to run
« on: May 24, 2011, 11:40:56 pm »

               Greetings.

Standard 'pulled out NWN to play with it again', albeit it on my Vista box I have been using happily for several years. I've skimmed this forum, but nothing has led to a working solution. I'm hoping to either find an answer or verify Vista ain't an option to run NWN Gold.

Note: When editting this, I noticed my drivers hadn't updated. As I know it forced a system restart last night when I tried updating, I going to assume video drivers are not an issue and re-do the update. I appreciate your patience if that's the culprit

Specs:Game Version: NWN Gold
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital: Retail CD
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Intel Quad Core
Processor Speed: 2.33GHz
Operating System / Service Pack: Vista, SP2.
System RAM: 8 GB
Video Card Manufacturer: ATI
Video Card Model: Radeon 4350 HD
Video Card RAM: < unsure >
Video Card Driver Version: 8.581.0.0
Sound Card Manufacturer: Realtek (on board sound)
Sound Card Model:
Sound Card Driver Version: 6.0.1.5789
CD/ROM Type: DVD/CD-ROM

Thank you for your time,
E

I don't know how exhaustive your search was about Vista "fussiness", but the legacy forum addressed many of the common problems running NWN under Vista in this sticky.

The quad core may be another source of concern.  There may also be driver issues but you will need to check around for tips about that... this forum or the legacy one.  IIRC there may be CPU Affinity settings to play with (sry, can't help with the multicore issues myself).

Those onboard sound configs can also cause run problems so it may be prudent to disable the sound (DisableSound=1 in nwn.ini) as a precautionary measure and see if that makes a difference.

Finally, if the Vdriver is so new it no longer supports OpenGL you may need to try an older one.  But I would wait until you get the standard ATI driver incompatibility report before rolling back the current one.

Just to check quickly... your current NWN installation is patched to v1.69, right?

v 1.69 via critical update. (1.69SoU update, specifically), running in Vista 64 bit.

Didn't consider the legacy forums, as they were closed and I overlooked how 'old' Vista is relatively.

Drivers were updated successfully, turned out I had 'current' drivers already in place. nwconfig lists OpenGL, so I believe it's compatiable. DisableSound=1 failed, though I'm leaving it in place.

Majority of the resolutions in the legacy thread summarize to 'administrator, XP compatiability & 'directly' trigger nwmain.exe', which continues to generate the same error. Re-ran the 1.69SoU patch after moving the NWN folder directly to my C: drive also.

Stumped. Tempted to do a full reinstall, but I think there's a conflict somewhere in the actually loading, rather than a setting.

Ahhh, 64-bit. Yeah, there can be issues getting the 32-bit applications running on 64-bit (like the 32-bit bink player the game installs) so check out anything you can find regarding 64-bit configs.  It doesn't matter what the OS is, the issues are similar regardless.

All the legacy forum information is alive and well. You just can't post anything any longer except in the guilds.  But the Search utility works fine and dandy yet (at least it did the last time I used it a few weeks ago).

Just out of curiosity, is this machine a desktop or mobile unit?

It's an older desktop, but it's stable, runs well and I'm content to keep it until a game I would like requires the necessary upgrade to the next machine. Vista hasn't been an issue, though I do miss XP at times.

@NWN DM - I don't have the option of XP SP3, only SP2. Possibly miss an update for Vista?

edit: SP3 isn't an option for Vista according to some google'd answers as Vista predates SP3. First time I actually regret not upgrading to Windows 7 since I got this box, as W7 does have SP3, based on what I've read.

I am still working on this, but between this forum, Bioware legacy and googling widely, I'm still at the same nwmain.exe -> eye icon -> black screen, error box & NWN icon for a mouse pointer. I did discover there is an update for the drivers, though I believe it has the same version of OpenGL.

Hmm... try XP SP2 compatibility and Run as Administrator then... should work I believe.

Negative DM. Be nice if it was that simple, but I suspect 64 bit Vista can't execute one of a few specific steps in SP2. I have a XP box in storage, so I might just pull it out, set up & update, then install NWN on it. Other options are upgrading to Win7 (money) or pirating ('').
