NwN freezing an older computer.
« on: April 08, 2011, 06:16:01 am »

Okay, so since I wanted to have NwN working on more than just the computer that runs it semi-decently, I decided to install it on my old desktop. Like it says in the title header, it's an older computer which I have no problems running Morrowind at all. The video card is an Nvidia GeForce 6200 A-LE, the ram is 786 MB, and it's a pentium III-900 MHz. The sound card is integrated on an VIA motherboard I believe, which I don't -think- that could be the issue if Morrowind is running fine I can play virtually all day and the only problem I have is a little bit of slowdown when being hit by a bunch of cliffracers, but as for NwN I dunno what's up with it freezing the whole system where I have to force reboot it. Like I said, I don't think that it's the sound card, but then again it could be.

Here's the dxdiag stuff.

System Tab
System: Microsoft Windows Professional XP Professional 32 bit
Processor: Intel Pentium III 900MHz
Memory: 786 MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c

Display Tab
Video Card Name: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 A-LE
Video Card Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip Type: GeForce 6200 A-LE
Video Card Memory: 128.0 MB
Video Driver Name (Main Driver): nv4_disp.dll
Video Driver Version: 6.14.0012.6658
Video Driver Date: 1/7/2011

Sound Tab
Sound Card Name: VIA Audio (WAVE) (emulated)
Sound Card Driver Name: ac97via.sys
Sound Card Driver Version: 5.10.0000.3622(english)
Sound Card Driver Date: 8/3/2004
Sound Card Driver Provider: Microsoft
(Edit: I figured out why it wasn't reading everything. I had a derp moment and had the hard acceleration turned down so it didn't read that stuff. x.x Sorry for that inconvineince! '' )

NWN info
Game Version: 1.69
Game Expansions: HOTU + SOU
Game Language: English

Like I said, an older rig, in fact... Ancient. It runs NwN for a few hours sometimes, other times a few minutes and locks up, then I have to hard reboot the thing. I mean for what it does run, it runs well. Graphics are good, fps is pretty decent, I can even play at higher resolutions than the other computer I play on, it's just the severe crashing in which ctrl+alt+delete doesn't even work. People say my rogue keeps firing his arrows while frozen. Thank god for Epic Dodge. Without it, I'm pretty sure my character on this PW would have been ganked. :innocent: Any help would be greatly appreciated! And I can't throw this old thing out and get a new one. As for a sound card, I dunno if that would work or not considering the motherboard has one integrated, but open PCI slots. It's a big head scratch for me, but hey, you can't just say no to free PCs.                Just a side note, when I disable the audio through the configuration settings in the NwN launcher it seems to work. I'm in the middle of testing it and so far no crashes. Any idea on how to fix it where I can have both sound and no crashes?

You can get a discrete sound card. Creative Labs cards work with EAX designed into the game (cool audio effects). Most motherboards have a BIOS setting to disable the onboard sound. Uninstall the current audio drivers, reboot, go into the BIOS and disable the onboard sound. Then power down the computer and unplug, install the new sound card, power on the computer and install it's drivers.

The onboard audio problems are a well known issue with this game, and this forum and it's predecessor ( nwn.bioware.com/forums/ )can be searched to find a multitude of threads on this topic. '<img'>
