Windows 7 Install Failure from Diamond DVD. Help?
« on: April 04, 2011, 01:45:17 pm »

I have a copy of NWN Diamond, which I know was good the last time I re-installed it on my XP box. Unfortunately, my XP box is roughly equivalent to 7-minute toast, so I now have a Windows 7 box. And there's where the problem comes in.

Followed the instrus in the guide to installing NWN on Windows 7, until I ran into a show-stopper problem. Attempting to install from
the Diamond Edition DVD results in the Installshield Wizard showing a
progress bar, then a little white box with a "i" in a blue circle and an
"OK" button (BUT NOTHING ELSE), and when you click on the "OK" button
the install fails to the desktop. No installation, no temp files written
to the HD, nothing.

So, I'm stuck. In order to play at all, I've had to restore an old backup copy from CD, but that copy is so old that it's showing signs of age-related corruption (can't use the launcher at all, and 2 out of 3 times I try to run nwmain.exe directly, it crashes before or during loading the menu).

If anyone can offer suggestions for getting my DVD to install past the show-stopping error, I'd be very grateful.

I have no idea what's happening, but I'm facing the same problem. I bought this CD a couple of months ago (had the regular version earlier) and couldn't play it at all, ever.

....etc

Ever consider just copying the entire NWN folder from the XP to a flashdrive and then to the Win7 C:drive folder? Since the XP installation appears to work fine even though slow, that may be the easiest resolution.

As I said in my original post, I restored my NWN installation from a backup CD, but the installation is showing its age, with failures to load at least half the time, and problems with it running when it does load.

I was forced to do this because, as I said in my original post, my XP system is the electronic equivalent of 7-minute toast. As in, the entire system is fried, right down to the primary hard drive.

Ahhh... can't access the old HD at all.  My bad. Apologies.

Your description doesn't sound exactly like what I encountered, but I'll offer this suggestion anyway.
When you start the installer it asks if you wish to install Kingmaker also. Choose NO. Install only the main game and campaigns.
When/if the game installs, then update with the critical rebuild.
As a final step you can run the Kingmaker installer alone.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I can get the installer to run that far without failing, I'll remember it so it doesn't have that point of failure as well.

I rather suspect your install is fine, but it's your windows 7 that doesn't like the old install.

Not sure what to do about the install (try running the exe as administrator and in win xp compatibility mode).

Also to play your existing installation, go to the nwmain.exe, right click to bring up the properties, and go to the compatibility tab.  Tick run as administrator, and tick run in compatibility mode for windows xp service pack 3.

               Ummmm... things you could try:

Make sure you have an administrator account when installing.
Try searching the disck and right clicking on the install.exe, then choose run as administrator, compatibility etc as in the wind 7 install thread instructions.
Copy the contents of the CD to the hard disk and follow the administrator advice above.

Good Luck!

Has anyone resolved this issue? I have the same problem as Fred. I Cannot initiate installation due to that blank box with the blue information sign.

Why not try the suggestions already posted in this thread and report back.

I've tried all the suggestions in this thread and have had no luck. I experimented with all kinds of compatibility settings in addition to the ones provided here. In addition, I disabled my antivirus and did the copy to disk trick.

Now what?

My first suggestion to all those whom are having this problem?

Please post your computer's statistics for each of yourselves. I have noticed those within the threads tend to have more information when you give them more details. As well, you may want to get Revo Uninstaller. See if there are any program fragments and such you haven't removed from your hard drives that may be hampering the process. It's happened to me before with a few other programs. (Thankfully not Neverwinter Nights 1.) As well, I tend to use CCleaner alot to remove cruft and chaff from the hard drive.

Now then, I have the Platinum edition compact disks to reinstall Neverwinter Nights. As well, I ended up purchasing a copy from GOG.com for a friend of mine that never bothered to use it. Between those, I have been able to get Windows 7 x32 and x64 to install the game. There might be something wrong with the DVD edition and Windows 7, but nothing I have heard documented before.

Done all these, which is how I manage to get it to load and run at all.
