When asked for original CD key, it only accepts my HotU key
« on: March 11, 2011, 09:53:51 pm »

               As the title says.

I Install NWN, the cd keys work for the install, but when I update it asks for them again in game and first it asks for is the Original CD key, it does not accept the cd key the original was installed with and only accepts the HotU CD key, then when it asks for the HotU CD key I can not use my original or the HotU CD key

When I try to install just NWN the original CD key I use to install with is classed as "invalid"

You should at least identify the exact product you are installing so we can suggest the best resolution to your problem.

For example, if you DL'd from GoG or another digital server they have their own method to furnish you updates.  If you are trying to use the updater button on the game screen that got installed, it hasn't worked in years, so procur the v1.69 Critical Rebuild for whichever version you are trying to patch.  If you have trouble finding it at the Bioware support site, we can link you.

It is also possible that your nwncdkey.ini contains the wrong keys and may need to be editted to match what was printed in the package, if you purchased a physical copy (discs).

The game I have is the original NWN 3 CD game (with the CD key under the CD's in which A's and R's are difficult to tell apart) and SoU and HotU on seperate discs in the same case.

What exactly happens:

I install the original game, it asks for CD key to install, I enter it(the one under the three CD's in the original case), it works
I get to the launcher, launch the updater (only to get the link for the critical rebuild) and download the critical rebuild and update.
Once updated I launch the game and after the intro cinimatics it prompts me to enter my NWN Original CD key which I enter the same one as what is it my case and CDkey file only to get it say "Invalid CD key"
I am then able to use my HotU CD key (even when I have not installed it and there is no CD key in the cdkey file)

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled it and it seems I am able to use the HotU CD key to install the original game aswell causing the HotU CD key to be key 1 one the cdkey file instead of the one in my original NWN CD box

Another thing to note, when I do enter my HotU CD key in game when it prompts (after the cinimatics) it does not tell me that it is invalid, it just does nothing, I press enter and the CD-key disappears and it just goes in a loop, but if I enter anothyer one it says it is invalid, I think my CD key might be so old that it no longer works =P although this is probably not the case

Well, I have gotten another key from a  friend of mine and it seems to work now, using my old original key for HotU and the key he has given me for my original install, still a little annoyed that my keys and borked but at least I can now get online =3

I doubt that CD keys can become defunct, they are just based on an algorithm that will always work, at least for installing and playing single-player.

Apologies for not being familiar with the older versions, but from what you are describing, you have the original NWN and then SoU & HotU as separate expansions. If so...

I will pass this on from an earlier discussion I read somewhere which focused on the proper way to upgrade the game when purchased spearately (i.e. neither Diamond, Platinum nor Gold versions).  The method required was to install basic NWN, apply the appropriate CR, then install SoU, apply the SoU CR and then finally install HotU and patch that one with its associated CR.  That is three steps.  I'll snoop around to see if I can find the original thread that addressed this, but this was the method suggested... much to my own surprise.

These should be the files you need to do the 3-step installation of v1.69 for Windows (English):
For the original English version
For SoU expansion
For HotU expansion

I recommend a clean install and complete removal of all previous installed folders, shortcuts, files before attempting to reinstall.  Also, I would manually download these files so you know exactly which version of the CR you are installing.  After you have completed the procedure, check your nwncdkey.ini and verify that the keys listed match those on the discs and if not , correct them before attempting to play on-line.  Good luck!
