Funny you should mention this because I had been pondering this exact concern with the CEP installation.
Do you recall what version you had in place when you made your last save in the OC? If you don't, you may need to experiment a bit until you do determine it. But this is what I would do if placed in a similar position:
Procure all the critical rebuild patch versions for all the intermediate versions from the Bioware site if you don't have them already. The last one should be 1.69. Be certain you use the patch(es) specifically designed for your discs (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, etc.).
Uninstall everything. Move all the CEP overrides, haks & tlks into a temporary folder. Then install the version you had running when you made the last save in the OC. If you did NOT have the expansions installed at that point, then don't install them until you find out if the older save file will load again with the vanilla installation. Then install the expansions and try to load it again. If the save still won't load, then start upgrading, one version at a time, pausing between each upgrade to check the save file loading again.
Presumably, you will discover what version the save file was written in and can complete the OC at that point. I would just finish the OC with the version installed at that point and leave the other upgrade versions and the CEP alone for the time being.
Once you have finished with the OC with your old save, upgrade to 1.69 and then install the CEP. If you have both expansions I wouldn't know why you would NOT upgrade to 1.69 unless you are running a foreign language version.
I hope this method helps you to at least discover what version was active when the save file was created, Good luck!
