SoU and HotU not agreeing with CEP?
« on: February 05, 2011, 10:26:09 pm »

Ok, I had NWN version 1.67 installed with the CEP (version 1.68 then converted somehow back to 1.67 for a reason Ican't remember). I then installed  SoU and HotU, and now I can't load any of my saved games! I just  get the message that says sth like "couldn't load because it was made with a newer version of the toolkit" or sth like that. Also, the game now claims to be version 1.59 although I still have the 1.68 stuff and the CEP installed and haven't done anything to them. Could the expansion packs have wiped out some of the patches I installed earlier? Should I reinstall the CEP and patches etc?

Any help would be much appreciated as I had got pretty far in the original campaign and am really angry about not being able to continue it '<img'>.

Funny you should mention this because  I had been pondering this exact concern with the CEP installation.

Do you recall what version you had in place when you made your last save in the OC?  If you don't, you may need to experiment a bit until you do determine it.  But this is what I would do if placed in a similar position:

Procure all the critical rebuild patch versions for all the intermediate versions from the Bioware site if you don't have them already.  The last one should be 1.69. Be certain you use the patch(es) specifically designed for your discs (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, etc.).

Uninstall everything.  Move all the CEP overrides,  haks & tlks into a temporary folder.  Then install the version you had running when you made the last save in the OC.   If you did NOT have the expansions installed at that point, then don't install them until you find out if the older save file will load again with the vanilla installation.  Then install the expansions and try to load it again.  If the save still won't load, then start upgrading, one version at a time, pausing between each upgrade to check the save file loading again.

Presumably, you will discover what version the save file was written in and can complete the OC at that point.  I would just finish the OC with the version installed at that point and leave the other upgrade versions and the CEP alone for the time being.

Once you have finished with the OC with your old save, upgrade to 1.69 and then install the CEP.  If you have both expansions I wouldn't know why you would NOT upgrade to 1.69 unless you are running a foreign language version.

I hope this method helps you to at least discover what version was active when the save file was created,  Good luck!

If you created and/or saved a module with the 1.68 version of the game. The 1.67 verison of the game toolset will not be able to open/run it.

You may want to try Liac Souls InfoChanger. But I will not garentee thet you will not have other problems.  It is all acording to what you have in your module.  You may just change one problem for another.  I would sugest that you just upgrade the version to 1.69

EDIT:  your problem is not with cep.  It is with the version of the game.

You don't have to reinstall the CEP, but you have to patch your game to at least the patchlevel (1.67?) you had before you installed the expansions. That is due to the fact that the expansions come with older versions of the nwmain and nwn executables (SoU with 1.52 and HotU with 1.58 english and 1.59 international, IIRC). So, yes, your game version now may well be 1.59. Just download the critical rebuild 1.69 for nwn+sou+hotu and apply it. It is possible to open a saved game with a newer patch level than the one it was created with.

It is not necessary to go one patch by one patch or to uninstall anything - just a waste of time IMHO.

Skildron deciphered the order of which you (the OP) applied the expansions and patches, so this sounds like the most effiicient route to go.  The version related to each expansion is valuable information for diagnosing a problem like this, so kudos to Skildron for furnishing them and the easy fix.
