Vista Issues
« on: January 01, 2011, 07:23:24 am »

               Hello hello -.^

So I use to play this on XP but, recently switched to Vista and well.
Doesn't Work apparently.

I've tried to download it in Programs x86 and even tried following the Win7 installation guide since I've heard it works for Vista and nothing.

I am using Diamond and the issue is, I start up NwN and the menu comes up for playing as dm , toolset, play, etc. Although when I click play or dm client it  shows a black box for the loader and says the program has stopped working. Although Toolset seems to load up fine. ( I haven't tried making a map with it yet) I've updated Nwn, tried the Safemovies=1 and nothing. I by far meet the req. Edit: I've also tried Admin Priv. On both the NWn.exe and NwnMain.exe

So, Ask me questions to help me , help you, to help me.

Or a quick fix is also nice. -.^

               Definitely must install it directly on the main drive directory (C:/NeverwinterNights or whatever drive you are using), not the x86 sector.

Run as admin.

Publishing your full specs is wise, not that you need to prove that your machine is capable to run NWN but rather to reveal the specifics of the newer OS features, like 64-bit vs. 32-bit and possible hardware/driver tweaks. Your nwconfig.ini should contain most of the specs anyway, so all you need to do is confirm if the specs reported correctly or not. It really does speed things up for all of us.

Follow the template in the Start Here sticky thread as best you can.  That way, others that may stumble by having a similar config will be able to identify and address your problem concisely.  To conserve space, paste the applicable info into your first post above.

edit: the rather long legacy forum Vista problem solving thread: nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html if your eyeballs can stand it ':huh:'

edit2: Ahha... 64-bit. Now the plot thickens!

               have you made sure that the game has admin privilage?

If you have not I think the easiest way. (not being a vista user myself) would be to create a short cut for nwmain.exe  Right click on it to get the properties box. There should be an option in the proptrties to run it as admin.   You then just need to run the game from the short cut.

If you ever need to run the DM client.  make a new shortcut and add  -dmc to the end of the target box.

I doubt the dual core is the source of the problem, but I've read mixed comments about dealing with NWN on a 64-bit system.  Sometimes it must be tweaked yet others run without a hitch.  It's been a long time trying to remember but it may be related to the 32-bit Bink player that NWN installs.  Dunno for sure tho, not using 64-bit myself. Let us hope that one of the 64-bit vets saunter by.  In the meantime, you may want to educate yourself by searching this and the legacy forum for that particular architecture issue.  Another possibility is adjusting the driver communication via the Catalyst utility.

*lol* i use foreward slashes to prevent our message board's odd "crawling" backslash interpretation problem '<img'>

I've heard it -can- be an issue and you can turn of CPU affinity with CPUAffinity=0 but, it still has the same effect so. Yeah, I don't think thats it either. AS for searching, thats what i'm doing but, its late on my end so. I'll work on it in the morning. Again thanks for the help.

Try disabling shiny water in the nwn.ini Video Options (ie. ShinyWater=0)
Also, just as a test, turn off the sound in Sound Options (i.e. DisableSound=1)
Try each 1 at a time.

I have no experience with the Catalyst unfortunately (I use a VERY old driver), but I've read setting it to -1 helps in some cases.

edit: oh, and the admin permissions is important (as has already been mentioned)

               I just recently helped a friend get NWN working on his Vista system.  The one thing i learned is that you have to install the critical rebuild patch.

               Sorry, had something to handle. Figured I should just bring it back to life instead of making another thread. Shinywater = 0 Doesn't fix it nad Disabling the Sound doesn't either. I tried each at a time and both at the same time with the same effect. The loader just comes up and the game doesn't even start.

Edit: Think it might have to do something with the Video in the beginning playing. Since the loader comes up and all. Not to mention ToolSet Works just fine but the game crashes when the loader comes up.

DoubleEdit: Tried DisableIntroMovies = 1 and Nothing. Just changing the pop up from Nwn has been know for compatibility issues with this windows version to Neverwinternights has stopped working.

To help I decided to post my nwn.ini
[Sound Options]
Music Volume=0.75
Voice Volume=0.75
SoundFX Volume=0.75
DisableSound=1
3D Provider=
[Display Options]
Width=800
Height=600
BitsPerPixels=32
RefreshRate=60
TexturePack=3
SafeMovie=1
[Config]
FirstRun=0
Connection=0
[Video Options]
VideoQualitySetting=3
Enable HardwareMouse=1
EnableEnvironmentShadows=1
CreatureShadowDetail=2
EnableGrass=1
EnableFastGrass=0
NumDynamicLights=8
NumShadowCastingLights=3
ShinyWater=0
CreatureWindSetting=2
EnableVisualEffectsHigh=1
EnableSkyboxes=1

               I remember that problem, but compatability mode fixed it for me, so if you have it set right, I don't think I can help.

DO NOT install in the x86 or windows directory,  keep your game away from the windows installation. (mine is on my D:Games Drive/directory).

Make sure All your .EXEs (nwn.exe, nwmain.exe) look EXACTLY like this:

http://www.howtogeek...bility-mode.png

Launch via nwnmain.exe, no other exe.

If using a shortcut, make sure it is pointing to nwnmain.exe, I also set the compatability mode on my shortcut the same as the above.

I have ZERO issues.

               Thanks for the response, I'll try it right now.

Edit: I had my compatibility set up like that but, I didn't disable visual themes or check the Desktop Composition...

My install is C:\\\\Neverwinternights... Should it be there or?

Edit2: So I checked them and tried to only execute the nwnmain.exe and it merely says it has stopped working instantly Although it is sayingh that the color scheme's are changing. Infact it says that I'm not compatible with the color scheme it is running at.

               To be honest, people say download the critical rebuild and I have no idea where that is. I think I may have downloaded it but, i'm not sure. I've patched to 1.68 or whatever the newest is and I think it may have been the critical Rebuild

The last Nevewinter Nights patch is v 1.69 <------ (Unless your copy is not English)

Also, if you haven't done it yet, Download the latest ATI Drivers for your card and for Vista 64bit from
the AMD Radeon driver download page. Because your 10.2 is not only old now but I believe I remember
it as being a problematic driver even on Windows XP 32 bit.
