High Pitched Noise coming from PSU while playing NWN/Toolset
« on: November 30, 2010, 03:58:26 am »

               UPDATE:
I have isolated this noise to the actual PSU. Apparently this is a known problem with corsair psu's and especially my 650w one... which is ironic because it has over 1300 5 star reviews on newegg and won best psu award for 2009 or something like that. Its known as "cap whine"

guy in this video has the same problem:

I have taken these troubleshooting steps:
Vacuumed out the PSU
Removed all extra internal devices from power (extra hd, cd drives)
Removed UPS unit

apparently it can only be fixed by replacing the psu with another brand. '<img'>

ORIGINAL POST:
Whenever I have an area opened in the toolset a high pitched noise comes from my computer case. I have tried to isolate it and it sounds like its coming from either the power supply or video card. The noise changes if I zoom in and out of the area from a really high pitched noise zoomed all the way in to quieter and quieter when i zoom out.

this noise is not coming from my speakers or headphones and is not an ambient sound placeable in the area. Ive tried turning off all ambient sounds and music for the areas and still nothing helps.

 Any ideas?

edit:

i also get this noise at the NWN login screen and character selecter and it doesnt go away until i load into a game

It's likely others have and just began swapping out components until the noise disappeared.  It appears from your brief description that it is hardware related.

Since you haven't mentioned whether you notice a similar situation playing other games or using other graphic-intensive utilities, it is harder to diagnose.

The demands of the graphic interface are seldom constant so depending on what the game's graphic burden is at a particular moment may determine if it is pushing your vcard beyond its current capacity to handle those calls.  There could be hot spots on the card or the power supply may be breaking down.  A thorough cleaning is the first step and then component swapping.  Check to make sure your fan(s) are clean while you have the cabinet apart.  Heat is killer.

At least that's how I handle strange noises.  Step-by-step, piece by piece, until I've isolated the source of the problem.

Heck, it could be something as simple as removing a card and reseating it again.  Who know's?

Listing your hardware specs would help.

it happens with no other game... its really really weird. im guessing a driver issue maybe? i know ive had past problems with video drivers on new cards running NWN. Im actually a computer tech for dell so troubleshooting hardware isnt exactly foreign to me '<img'>

i7 2.80 OC'd to 3.49

Radeon HD 5850

Windows 7 64-bit

4 gigs ddr3

I tend to assume complete ignorance when there is no evidence to the contrary, so apologies for the apparent condescending suggestion.  As a techie then, you should know how important it is to paint a complete picture, hence the recommendation for a full expose' of specs per the Start Here sticky.

I also tend to believe the main issue is with the 64-bit OS.  I'm not sure if the compatibility modes really solve the problem.  I've read about others finding and installing a 64-bit Bink player since the stock DLL with NWN is just a 32-bit one.  But without being a 64 user I can't offer an opinion there, just an avenue to explore further.

Unless the newer drivers continue OpenGL support, you still need a work-around of some sort.  Certain versions seem to change it so that NWN can't digest it properly.  Are you using an ATI Catalyst now?  If so, which version?

updated the graphics driver to the latest version and still no help.. i cant imagine im the only one having this problem with nwn. im somewhat sure it has to do with using win7 64-bit and really new technology... anyone else ever come across this problem and fixed it?

Make sure to lodge your opinion of the product at the same place that raves about its performance.  So much for popular opinion. '<img'>

Yep I just did... actually theres two reviews on the main feedback page that complains about the same problem:

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817139005

"Cons: After 2 days capacitors have started squealing, as I feared. This is my first and last time trying cosair, I will never buy another product from them and will discourage anyone from buying a cosair product."

"Cons: When you try playing games the PSU whines like a 6 year old kid who just dropped his ice cream cone, only louder and more obnoxious."
