Linux - NWN Standard Portrait Problems
« on: August 30, 2010, 06:23:46 am »

               Good day -
I am wondering if anybody can shed some light on an interesting problem that I am having.

I installed NWN, SoU, and HotU as specified on the linux install page (http://nwn.bioware.c...inuxclient.html), and I find that when creating a character the portraits are exhibiting some confusion.  There is a section of portraits that work like normal; I can select the thumbnail and I get that portrait.  However, after the standard nwn portraits for my gender/race are shown, there is a black, blank portrait thumbnail followed by the rest of the portraits for that gender that include all races.  When I click on these portraits, the huge picture shown is different from the thumbnail, sometimes including NPC portraits like a minotaur or something.

This happens after expanding the nwresources129.tar.gz and nwclient129.tar.gz and persists even if I install any/all of the expansions and updates, making the expansions' extra PC portraits thumbs and huge images different.

Sorry for the novel here, but does anybody have any ideas?  I have searched and searched, experimented and racked my brain, but to no avail.

Things to know: I have nothing in my "portraits" directory, and have renamed my "overrides" directory to see if that changed anything... Nothing helped so far.

I have also tried using the Windows install data, but the problem persists, leading me to believe that it has something to do with nwclient129.tar.gz.

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
Here are my specs:
Hardware:  Acer Aspire One (aoa150) with integrated Intel GMA 950
Driver:  xf-86-intel
Kermel modules:  intel_agp i915

Bard Simpson, are you out there????

Bard is one of our resident Linux users who usually has many oars in water.

I am clueless about Linux idiosyncrasies myself, but in the meantime, perhaps publishing your video specs may help.  I know there were some problems related to some cards mishandling DDS and needing to have them converted to TGA but have no way of knowing if this has anything to do with your issue. Sry.

Let's keep our mutual fingers crossed that some Linux folks will stumble by soon.

*bump*

Thanks for the update.  I don't have the computer with me today, but I'll post the specs tomorrow.
Edit:
Posted hardware and drivers above.

               Who, me? I didn't do it! '<img'>

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions here. I've only been running Linux for a couple of months and just don't know enough. I'll see if I can find anything in the Linux forum on the old BioBoards, but can't offer anything else.

Good luck, though, mkuch.

Couldn't this be because of portraits images filenames do not match filenames specified in 2da? from what I know unix is very sensitive about this... Just an idea.

Yeah it could be a simple issue of capital letters in the 2da, and the filenames not being capitilized.  Linux is sensative to such things.

Portraits by default are TGA so not a DDS issue there.

When I did my linux install I pulled resources from disc(Diamond) save the 1.69 patch as per these instructions.  My default portraits show up fine.

I'm running an intel card n9500? with a laptop, on an Ubuntu 10.02 install.

I nominate these legacy instructions to be made a sticky here in social as well.  Could solve lots of trouble for those installing with their newer configurations.

One question: will the CODE windows from legacy translate properly in this message format or must the font just be changed to a fixed one for the CODE entries?
code

Next question:  Do you have an alternate address for the NWMovies v4.0 RC1 utility?  The legacy link is dead and I haven't located a substitute via web search.

Ah, now I can help with thisone. This is a great place for some one-stop-shopping for Linux/NWN.

You know, the whole capitalization issue makes some sense. I temporarily had a small problem with some custom portraits not being available; it was due to capital letters in portrait file names. In my case, though, the affected portraits just showed as white boxes at character creation.

See? You DID do it! '<img'>

Off hand, Bard, which one is the download that matches with the legacy link?

Ugh, now I'm supposed to properly answer the question? '<img'>

The third link down, Movies Inside the Linux Client. (Now with 100% more native Bink Support!), takes one to a page with a readme and three versions of the required file. The first (and most recent) version is the way to go.

This is normal behaviour on my system as well - IIRC it was introduced with patch 1.67. You have access to most PC portraits even if they don't match your race.

This, on the other hand, is not normal behaviour. As you are running thr linux client, the first thing that comes to mind is upper/lower case troubles, the second is access rights. I suggest running the fixinstall script from your nwn directory once again, just to be sure everything is in order and if that does not help, check your installation with the directions from this post. It expects you to have patched your nwn to 1.69.

HTH
Greetings
Skildron

Ah, Skildron, it's good to see a real NWN/Linux expert around these "new" forums. I don't think mkuch could do too much better than getting advice from you. '<img'>

               Thanks folks!

I've been out of town for awhile, without computer access.  I will try the suggestions and let you know what happens in the next day or so.

Thanks again!

               Harumph...

So I went through and checked all of my md5s against what was posted; everything was fine.  I went ahead and did the exact same install process on another linux box that was set up almost identically, but had a nvidia card, and no problem with portraits -- must be an intel thing.

I shall continue to hunt for solutions regarding this Intel phenomenon.

Hmmm maybe, I have a 9400m card, which I think is Nvidia...

Nice enough card... I seem to remember issues on old forums with Intel cards... can't say what they were though, have you looked through the old linux forum?
