Just a small problem, but really annoying. ....fixed!!!
« on: August 26, 2010, 06:20:59 pm »

Hi, i'm running Neverwinter nights with both expansion packs and have recently used a critial rebuild as normal patching hasn't worked ever since i bought the disc. '<img'>

It works now after the rebuild, so i updated to 1.69, and now i'm getting strange white textures appearing in the toolset and in game, both the old forums and the new talk don't talk about certain items such as horses, barrels, hitching posts and lance/shield racks being completely white in texture, only portraits and character models.

Its not the end of the world, but it really takes away from the cool fantasy of the game when certain things look like they've been attacked by a child with paint. ''

List of things so far white:
Hitching post
Stack of 3 barrels
Lance rack, but not the lances on it, which is weird
Shield rack, including shields
All horses and horse robes/tails/ect.
-Some more I can't remember.

I've tried replacing the xp2textures.bif file at the advice of a friend, but it hasn't brought any luck.

Any help would be great. Thanks.':wizard:'

Excellent link, ShaDoOoW!  Well worth the double post burp. '<img'>

For my own edification, do you have any idea what "certain computers" is referring to in the description of the fix? Is it specific cards or other hardware that causes the digestive problem with the DDS graphics... perhaps some lower-end cards/drivers?  The fix appears to pre-date 64-bit Vista & Win7 ills.

No I don't know any more about this issue. I just walked into this entry when I was looking for any content for my patch.

Well, I'm downloading the file now, and I really hope it works. For the benefit of HipMaestro, it must be low-end cards/drivers, I'm running NWN on a Packard-bell from 2003 (I think) with xp and with only the built in graphics and sound cards. So that might be why I'm having these problems. The game worked fine with shiny-water off and some other in-game graphical settings lowered, until this patch came out. The TGA files I've just downloaded from your link have fixed the issue and I can't thank you enough ShaDoOow, thanks again!

It's not so much certain computers as certain older video cards not handling the compressed DDS texture format.  An uncompressed texture needs less horsepower from the graphics card as it doesn't have to do extra work.

In fact, it's more often a driver than a video card issue. At least on my linux systems, newer linux versions have difficulties with dds compressed textures, while older versions don't. It's due to the fact that ATi (AMD) has stopped the driver support/development for many older GPUs. The latest drivers don't support the older cards and older drivers don't work with the newer linux systems. So I need third party drivers that don't support all of the GPUs features - dds compression being one of them. There are hacks and workarounds, of course, but it does not work out of the box. When I tried Windows 7 on my older desktop system, I had similar problems - old drivers did not work, up to date drivers don't support my ATi X600 based board. After some looking around I found a working version, though.

Greetings

Thanks Skildron.  I didn't know that particular bit.  I thought that is why many DDS packs often included TGA, or have TGA as an option to download.  As for hacks and work arounds, there is always something for NWN it seems, but would be nice to have out of the box operability.
