I'd try making a Games folder (or whatever you want to name it) and installing NWN in there.

Hi all, I installed before reading this guide and I skipped the part where you install the patch on the diamond disc, and I just went straight to installing the 1.69 patch.  I haven't noticed any ill effects from doing this.  Should I expect any in the future?  What is the reason for installing the intermediate patch on the disc?  Isn't the 1.69 patch a comprehensive one?

Also, I had the jittering problem and I read somewhere else that I should set CPU affinity to -2 to fix it.  I did that and it worked, even though I don't know what the -2 setting does.

One last problem that i am having is that once in a while when I start the game, it crashes and I get a small window error message that says "Neverwinter Nights has stopped working"  I just end the program and try again and that usually works.

TBH, I never installed the patch manually off of Diamond. The installation just did it automatically.  When I went to play the game the first time, the welcome screen reported that it was running at v1.66.

What you need to keep in mind is that diferent configurations and especially different OS versions may call routines just slightly different.  The v1.66 to v1.69 recommendation came about after many failed installations "forced" this particular tenet.  In my own situation, the ONLY way I was able to get v1.69 to install properly was to first install v1.68, with both patches applied as critical rebuild versions... and that routine worked great.  I have no clue if the v1.66 included on the Diamond DVD was a critical rebuild or just a simple update of the former version.

Also, I had the jittering problem and I read somewhere else that I should set CPU affinity to -2 to fix it.  I did that and it worked, even though I don't know what the -2 setting does.

Congratulations!  That's the benefit of any reliable procedure... no insight is needed to succeed. '<img'>

I would suspect an inadvertent corrupt file, an incomplete one or a driver issue.  It depends on how annoying the crashing becomes as to whether you are willing to experiment further.  If so, document EXACTLY the procedure and settings you used to get it to operate as well as it does now just in case.  You may know better if/when you start to add customizations (like CEP) that push the rendering capacity farther than the vanilla game.

Hi there. I have been playing NWN1 since release but have experienced several lulls (breaks if you will) during my stints. Unfortunately, I have lost my game discs but my CD keys should still be registered to this account. I remember on the old nwn.bioware.com website, there was a way I could retrieve them.

However, I find myself currently wanting to play NWN but don't have any way to install the game (no discs). Does Bioware/EA not support a way to download the game clients and retrieve my old CD Keys? Other developers (Blizzard comes to mind) support this level of service and I find it surprising that Bioware/EA is moving away from this format.

Unless I'm missing something of course.

Significantly off-topic in a "How-to-install-NWN" thread, but nonetheless...

Once Bioware was absorbed into EA the legacy site was closed along with all services and the substantial knowledge base.  "This account" on BSN is not the one you typed your keys into many, many moons ago. Apparently, EA decided 10 years was long enough to support NWN and have refocused their resources (including whoever is left from the original Bioware staff) in other ventures. In short, when the NWN discs and keys are gone, they are gone for good, unless one is capable of navigating the space-time continuum.

Many folks in a similar situation simply DL a copy of the Diamond version from GoG or similar game vending site.  The standard cost is around 10USD but there are occasionally promotions that offer even better bargains.  No need to shop on Ebay that way.

$10 isn't that much to play one of my all-time favorite games again. So Diamond Edition it is. Thanks for the post HipMaestro.

OK so I found a youtube video about some of this stuff, it was talking about installation and so forth, well, i started following it and found out some interesting things, it seems im missing a lot of files in the folders, ie..override, patch, servervault, source, tempclient. and again the dialog.tlk is there (twice) along with the binkw32.dll. im doing my best to fegure this out but im having no luck at all. i downloaded the nwnenglish1.69dialog file.....its empty so that is telling me i did not unzip it correctly (i assume since its empty) there is a 2dasource file with a zipper on it, not doing anything with it since i seen nothing about it and will most likely mess it up. the hak file has 5 icons in it data file has 42, now just started opening folders and found one that has this as far as CEP's go  http://nwncep.com/we...lcomecep_fi.htm so im going to try it. ahhh well its a 1.52 so lets see what it does.......hehe, dont know what im doing but this is kinda fun right, whats the worst that can happen? hahaha, there is no connection to the internet....how interesting

ok, so re-installed once more, now doing the crit rebuilds. now when i installed i elected to go to C drive, well started the download for the crit rebuild and decided to see where i would like to install it, opened up C drive and no nwn/nwn2, so began my search, found it, in program files (x86), have no clue how that happened? when i installed it i chose C drive program files, then deleted it all gain, just chose c drive for yet another install. i have deleted this game and re-installed it over 40 times within the past month. i am getting nowhere with this. this will be my last attempt. as much as i enjoy the people and playing this, it should not be this difficult. i understand that there is always problems but the fixes were a lot easier to understand and fix. So, if i see you i shall see you in game, if not, then i have given up and will do something else. thank you all for the outstanding support threads and few comments that i have received. i remember dealing with some of you from last i played. thanks again to all.

NWN Diamond (DVD) installation problem (resolved):

Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, ATI HD 5800, 12 gigs of RAM, Desktop, full admin rights, ran DVD as admin = installation not happening.

During installation from DVD, the initial splash screen to install would appear with music.  After clicking to install, the splash screen would disappear.  The following error would be shown:

"Access to %1 has been restricted by your Administrator by policy rule %2."

I tried everything listed at the beginning of this thread, which didn't work.  I soon found this:

"Software Restriction Policy Notification displays a message to the user and writes an event to the event log when the user attempts to run a program
that is not allowed by the policy. If the software restriction policy is enforced on all users, then messages will be displayed to both standard users and administrators. If the policy is enforced on all users except local administrators, then users logged on with administrative credentials will not be notified
as the policy will not apply to the programs that they run.
If the policy is enforced on all users and the Basic User default security level is selected, local administrators may not be able to run programs that require administrative credentials unless those programs are specifically excluded from the rule.
Right click on the software installation file and click on “Run as administrator”.
If that doesn’t help, then follow these steps:
1. Click on start and then click control Panel.
2. Open Administrative Tools.
3. Open Local Security Settings.
4. Click Software Restriction Policies.
5. If no software restrictions are defined, right click the Software Restriction Policies node and select New Software Restriction Policy
6. Double click Enforcement
7. Select "All users except local administrators"
8. Click OK
9. Reboot the computer."

(from here)

It worked!  I was able to install.  All good, now.

*note:  I had no software restrictions defined (5 above)*

               Hello,

I've recently purchased the Diamond Edition of NWN 1 from GOG.com and can't seem to get it going on Windows 7. The game itself runs but the FPS is very low - almost less than 1. I have a Dell Studio 1537 with a dual core Intel, 4 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 3400 and an integrated AMD Audio. I tried to run it in a compatibility mode (XP SP 3 and 2), as well as play with the other options in this properties tab. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!

Best wishes,
Yulian

P.S. Additional specs: I run a 32bit Windows 7. I tried to update all drivers to the newest version.
