Henchman dissipering
« on: July 31, 2010, 08:46:37 am »

I am running the Diamond version on Vista with the 1.69 patch. I was at the end of the third chapter when my henchman suddenly left my party in the middle of a battle. He was still there but no longer under my control, refusing to talk to me when clicked apon.
I picked up another henchman for the rest of the chapter, but when I was batteling in chapter four the same thing happened. As there is no place I know of that I can select another one I can't manage to get pass the finial boss.
This is the first time I got this far (having to have started the game again, everytime I switch computers) and I was looking forward to finishing it.
I would like to know if their is another place to pick up a hencman in chapter four, I way to fix the problem to give me back my old henchman or the reasurence that it should not happen again if I start another game.

I am guessing you are playing the OC.  If so, only the henchman attached to your party at the end of Chapter 3 will be present (available) when the Chapter 4 module loads.

Your problem description is similar to the faction bug which may occasionally occur during gameplay.  It involves the missed setting of a scripted flag which can be manually reset using the console if you know specifically which flag is in error.

There are a few sources which can cause this if it does involve a faction change.

Question:  Does the estranged henchman turn neutral (blue) or turn hostile (red) or remain in your party (portrait displayed)? If still displayed, you can use the radial to dispatch which may restore the dialog script again and then rehire.

Question: What difficulty are you playing on?  It's possible you injured your ally with an AoE spell and induced a faction change.  Are you playing a class who can cast AoE spells?

If your PC didn't cause the faction change, it is probably a gliche which often times become resolved when a new module loads.  However, that doesn't mean it can't gliche again although extremely rare to do that.

These types of errors do happen on occasion so it is best to just play around the problem if you can or if you would rather not start a new game, restart Chapter 3 and go on from there.  Your saved PC will likely be at an abnormally high level for Ch 3 but still quite playable for the duration of the current game. The good news is that there are methods to win the battles as solo character which I cannot divulge here.  If you need any solo (without henchman) solutions, please post the dilemma in the Official Campaign spoiler forum and we will go on from there.

I would suggest to just finish your current game solo and then start/play through another game.  If the problem seems to be chronic, I would reinstall the game (with patch) since a file may have been corrupted during install.  After the reinstall, if it occurs regularly again, repost you question complete with full specs of your machine, video card w/driver version, sound card w/driver, DirectX version, etc.

Others members may know the specific resets for you to try so be patient and see who else replies.

Starting from chapter 3 seems like the most logical step to take. I will do that then. I am relieved to hear that no henchmen in chapter four was not a major glitch.

Thank you for the quick and informative reply.
