Cd Key continuously prompts
« on: July 23, 2010, 08:24:30 pm »

               Before you go pointing me towards the other thread, I've already seen Jorel Noronha's post and even though it sounded like the same problem, he was able to fix his with a simple typing correction. I'm *positive* there is no typing error here. When I installed the game earlier today, it accepted all three of my codes without any problem.

I was recently given a copy of NWN Platinum, so I know the codes worked at least once before! I called my pal who gave it to me and he says he never had this error. When I open up the game it plays it's little intro movie and the logos etc, and then prompts me to enter my code for my original NWN. I enter my first code, nothing happens. I enter the second code (for Shadows of Undrentide) and it works. Then it asks for Hoards of the Underdark's code and it enters smoothly.

...then it asks me for my first code, second code, and the third code again. Except it doesn't repeat again - i just keeps bringing up the same code box for Hoards of the Underdark. It doesn't tell me I entered it wrong, it doesn't prompt me at all except for clearing out the code I just typed in and asking for it again. I've exited the game and retried several times with the same results, I even went in to the keycode.ini and made sure the codes were properly listed (which they weren't, I had to fix the first code to match mine because it was the same as the second code, and that didn't change anything in the game launcher. Also, when I exited the game and checked the ini file again, the codes had reverted to the incorrect form).

I'm currently trying to install the patch (1.69) because using the updater with the launcher doesn't work, and I'm just wondering if this problem can be solved. Is there a way to circumvent the checker at all? I mean, I know the game is good, and obviously the codes were good because it installed correctly, so why get me trapped in a loop? :c

Any help would be appreciated.

               Downloaded the patch and tried again. Same thing.

I'm thinking the problem may be that because it's only recognizing two of my codes it keeps wanting a third, not sure how to fix that though.

I'm noting here that I am NOT using these codes for multiplayer, nor will be. Most things I've found with people having issues with their code keys are because they're trying to use them online. This is not my case, this is for the game alone.

               I sent an email to Atari, since some people have seemed to have found this helpful...

               Check your nwncdkey.ini file and see if they are all entered in the following format:

;These are your CD Keys for Neverwinter Nights.
;DO NOT share these CD Keys with ANYONE.
;Apart from this installation, or when registering with the Official Neverwinter Nights Community Site [http://nwn.bioware.com], BioWare and Atari will NEVER ask you for this CD Key.

[CDKEY]
Key1=11111-11111-11111-11111-11111-11111-11111
Key2=22222-22222-22222-22222-22222-22222-22222
Key3=33333-33333-33333-33333-33333-33333-33333
if they are not there, it may be that your nwncdkey.ini file is write-protected or that you do not have permissions to edit the file.

               It is in that format, correctly. The problem I'm seeing is:
Key1=22222-22222-22222-22222-22222-22222-22222
Key2=22222-22222-22222-22222-22222-22222-22222
Key3=33333-33333-33333-33333-33333-33333-33333

I've tried editing it to accept my code #1, but it always reverts back to this. It should still accept whatever codes are there, though, I don't see why it needs to continueously prompt me over and over for something I just entered.
Atari wants me to send them scans of everything, like receipts, they seem to have missed that this was a used copy given to me. /sigh/

               Make  a backup of your nwncdkey.ini file in a safe place.

With Notepad, manusally edit the nwncdkey.ini file with your correct cd key and save it, then try launching the game.

               Follow the moderator's directions.  The keys MUST be in the format that was illustrated for you for the game to digest them (the moderator's example includes hyphens interspersed, your example does NOT.. very important). It is likely you are using Win7 or some OS that requires administrative permissions to edit what should be a benign file.  The new-fangled security layers of the new-fangled OS's make it more difficult to edit just any old file.  So you are the one who must change permissions to gain WRITE access to them.

               I have done so, and it reverts back to the original problem'd text.

@HipMaestro, I'm using XP. The hypens aren't there because of my laziness to type them all out, not because that's the format of it. I'll go back and edit.

Very odd.  Try this...
Make the edits and save as another filename (let's call it "nwncdkeytemp.ini") but be sure to use the .ini extension. Keep in the same folder as the original. Then move the original, unaltered nwncdkey.ini file to another folder named whatever is handy maybe like "inihold" or something.  Then go back and rename the temp one as "nwncdkey.ini".

Report the status you have:
When you made the new temp one, are the key entries formatted correctly?
If so, when you renamed as the temp file, are they still formatted correctly in the temp?
If both above="yes", what happens when you start the game?

If either above="no", it most likely is a permissions problem.
Make sure that the box "Read only" is UNCHECKED.
My NWN folder is set as "Read only" so I doubt that is the problem.

@HipMaestro, I'm using XP.

Same here.
When you boot up, do you log in as Admin?
Which service pack have you installed?
Have you tried any other text editors than Notepad?

               Temp one keeps it: yes. Renamed it: yes.

Loaded up the game. It doesn't seem to have reverted this time, but it still would not accept the new Key1= code (which I assume is for the original game).

It asks for The Original NWN Code (I assume is #1), it doesn't take #1, it accepts #2, it asks for Shadows and accepts #3, then it asks for Hoards, accepts #3, and then contineuously prompts for Hoards (while not accepting #1).

....could the problem be that I don't HAVE an original game? All I have is Platinum, the four disks that come with it.

Neither answer is no, but, I don't have to log in as anyone. Service pack 3, and no, I haven't.

It's strange (to me) that you don't have to run your XP OS as admin because I (and everyone I know who operates under XP) get FORCED to.  Perhaps you should try to log in as admin just to see if it changes anything.  Couldn't hurt.  Anyways...

Now for some education (on my part).
Does Platinum install both Shadow of Undrentide AND Hordes of the Underdark?  Sry for my ignorance but it is tough to keep all the specifics of the versions in mind.  (I'm trying to understand why your game is only selecting 2 of the 3 CD keys.)  I'm wondering also if somehow during installation that a step was skipped somehow that would have entered all the keys automatically.

One thing I would do for sure is download the Critical Rebuild to patch you up to v1.69.  After re-reading your original post, I see you never patched which, when completed, sometimes will correct the authentication problems.  Skip the updater (it never seems to work for anyone) and try this link which should be the correct one for English Platinum Critical Rebuild:

http://files.bioware...9HotUUpdate.exe

I don't consider this suggestion a wild goose chase because you will need to get updated to have access to much of anything anyway... and it has fixed some problems for me.  It's a huge download (over 300Mb) but believe it or not actually smaller than the one the updater applied when it worked.

Keep us posted as to any progress.

               On the admin bit, I always thought it was a bit odd. I mean, when I turn on my computer, straight up (didn't close it, didn't hibernate, didn't restart. A straight shut down and then boot up) it doesn't ask me to log in or anything. I believe my computer is simple registered under "Pinky", in all my user files, and there isn't an admin profile. I suppose Pinky = admin, and it doesn't make me log in.

Platinum installs both of them. During installation, I entered three different codes and it accepted them all then. I did updated to 1.69, it took me two tries (cause at 50% the first round my power went out), and about eight hours worth of time. I didn't run the game before I installed the patch, because, hey, why would I want to start a faulty game?

               Thank you both so much for your help! '<img'> The support email I sent to Atari seems to have payed off - I jumped through their hoops and they sent me three new codes, and the first one got me into the game right away (I didn't even have to enter the other two, what's up with that?).

I shall now gather my party and venture forth. Thank you again!
