Switching through terrain variations
« on: August 29, 2014, 02:00:37 pm »

Hello,

I have a tileset with 20 or so variations of a certain terrain (*winks to Zwerkules*). Upon placing them, the toolset picks randomly one.

Now, let's say, I only want tile no. 20 - not only once, but alot of times. Now, using the eraser-tool to get it to choose tile 20 is a pain, since the toolset makes those random picks.

If I remember right, "six" wrote in some post (a great while back), that while holding CTRL or ALT or SHIFT together with the eraser makes the toolset choose the variation in a set (raising) order (01->02->03->04->...). I don't manage to copy that... ''

So: Is there a way to get quickly a certain variation/bypassing the random pick? At leat this "order" trick would make it controlable.

The key is "Shift" and you have to be hit the "Select Terrain" button first - this button also allows you to right click on an individual tile and change its animation and lighting properties. Then you just hold "Shift" and right click on the tile and the toolset will index through the options available for that particular tile.

you can copy paste or cut tiles using CTRL+C (copy) CTRL+V (paste) and CTRL+X (cut)

Edit : what Shadooow said. Once you have two tiles, if you want a lot, it may be faster to select / copy paste 2, 4, 8...

Not only can you copy and paste using CTRL+C, after you use CTRL+V to paste, you can right click on your mouse to rotate the selection 90 degrees counter-clockwise with each click just as you can when painting tiles normally, then left click to place.

That's right. There's one thing you have to keep an eye on when you use this method. If you already placed a door on a tile you want to change like this or the tile has a tileset specific door, the tile will be replaced by a new tile, but the door(s) will not be removed. They might end up inside a building where you can't see them, so before you use this method, make sure you remove all doors on the tile you want to change.

*winks* Or use it as a shortcut to -add- a door into a tile not normally having a doorway. You can then adjust the doors location using the "adjust location" option found in the area list on the lefthand side of the toolset.

You all just made my day! Works like a charm!

Good info / trick regarding the doors!

Well, it seems that I totally missed an important function of the "Select Terrain" button all these years! '<img'>

Thanks again.

The toolset is full of hidden keyboard shortcuts which do things menus can't. For example, CTRL C X V often work in situations where r-click doesn't, such as conversation editing.

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but kinda related to this topic, I came across the following bug:

In the tno rural tileset, when you place the Castle Low terrain next to Grass and then use shift + right mouse to circle through all the available tiles, it only jumps from tno01_n01_04 to tno01_n10_01 and then back again to tno01_n01_04, omitting all the other tiles (except when you have another tile placed to begin with, though it gets stuck in this cycle as soon as you get to tno01_n01_04).

I already posted this in the Custom Content section in a PQ thread, but thought I'll try again here. Maybe someone knows what would cause this issue and how to fix it.

There is a bug in the set file. tno01_n01_04 is tile 208, but there's another entry for it as tile 248.

Maybe in some areas that have already been built with the tileset tile 208 is used and in others 248 is used, so changing tile 248 to be a dummy tile might break areas. The best option would be to change the tile name of tile 248 to tno01_n01_05 (since that one doesn't seem to exist) and make a copy of tile tno01_n01_04 (maybe with a few minor changes) and save it as tno01_n01_05 and include it in the hak.

I just tried that and it worked!
