2013 April - Adventure Building Challenge
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:01:45 am »

The April Adventure Building Challenge is upon us.
Participants have until Friday April 26th to complete their module.

This month's challenge is to make a module using at least one of the following ADVENTURE SEEDS:
  • Summoned - PC is summoned to complete a task. Consider the summon a spell of enough power to summon a being of equivalent power to the PC, but the PC need not have been specifically targeted. This idea was inspired by the summon spell. Why couldn't a PC be summoned instead of a Dire Animal or Planar beastie?
  • Perilous Lodgings - The PC is given shelter from one danger (freak magical storm? riots in the streets?), but upon settling into their room discovers another one. The master of the house has ulterior motives for the offer of hospitality (vampire who devours guests? a dark religious order in need of a sacrifice?) This idea was taken from the Fighting Fantasy Game Book, House of Hell/Hades.
  • Pieces of Eight/All at Sea - A watery adventure set amidst an archipelago of small islands. It could involve pirates but then again maybe not.

Continuing the Story Arc
For those wishing to bypass the Adventure Seed, they can do so by continuing a story arc begun in a prior month. Example, Snow Hunt was about a bounty hunter and ended with the bounty hunter PC collecting on their bounty back in civilization. Rogueknight333, the creator of Snow Hunt, could resume this story where it left off - or if another builder wants to do it they could talk to Rogueknight333 and ask for approval to continue that story.

GO!

Send completed works on or before the deadline to abc.nwn@gmail.com.

GUIDELINES (aka. Modders Code):
  • Modules may be of any play length you like. It is recommended that the adventure require no more than an hour to complete, but like the Pirates say, this is just a guideline.
  • Modules shall be playable in vanilla NWN, meaning that third party add-ons (NWNX, NWShader etc...) are not required to play it.
  • The Module itself shall be the work of the participant, BUT scripts, conversations, blueprints etc... may be from any source. This means that anything contained within the module is NOT restricted. Please do provide credit to the makers of any resources you are using in your Readme.
  • Module Specific Custom Content (AKA the other stuff you submit with your module) is restricted to one of each filetype: HAK, TLK, Character File, Movie, etc... AND to a maximum combined size of 12 MB. Including a README is encouraged as players will at the least need some installation instructions. (Note: It is strongly encouraged that HAK, TLK and Module all share the same name to make things easier for users.)
  • Sponsored Custom Content is NOT restricted. Please see Adventure Building Challenge Resources for a complete list of custom content you may use in addition to the Module Specific Custom Content described above. Keep in mind that you will not be packaging Sponsored Custom Content with your submission. Players of your work will thus need to be directed to download and install the content in order to play your module.
  • Optional Player Content is NOT restricted. You are welcome to encourage players to use enhancements with your module. For example, you could upload custom music to the vault that your module is setup to use. Players that download the music will hear it. Others won't, but otherwise can still play. The same goes for sound affects, overrides etc.... Feel free in your installation instructions (README) to encourage players to download these. As long as the resources are not required to play your module there is no problem with setting up your module to take advantage of them.
  • All Deliverables which includes your Module, and Module Specific Custom Content are to be sent via email in one archive (eg. ZIP, 7Z, RAR). Although not required, including a Readme in the archive is recommended as players may need instructions. (If you are particular about the name you would like your work posted under or any other pertinent details, please let us know when you send it in.) Another nice thing to send are SCREENSHOTS. The challenge vault page can make good use of these to advertise your modules.
  • Entries received after the deadline will probably be accepted, but will not be awarded the coveted COMPLETION PRIZE.

A few other considerations:
  • Builders retain ownership of their submittal. It is important to us that you understand that you retain full rights to your work. When you submit your work to the ABC you are giving us the right to post it under your name as one of the submissions in the month's challenge. If you do not want your work posted by us, but still wish to be recognized as a participant in the challenge, please contact us and we'll work something out.
  • Teamwork is accepted and encouraged.
  • We recognize that the rules still need more clarification. We plan to release a FAQ someday. Until that day comes, if you have questions, post them in the ABC thread and we'll answer as best we can.
  • Please keep this thread to discussion of this month's challenge. Screenshots of works in progress are encouraged.
  • For general discussion about the Adventure Building Challenge, please see the Adventure Building Challenge thread.
  • Technical questions are best posted throughout the forum.
  • Have any ideas for future challenges? Please submit them to the Adventure Building Challenge thread for consideration.

Now to get pen to paper and decide what I'm going to do. I have some ideas involving either the perlious lodgings or the summoned PC.

Alright my module will be made for a level 1 rogue, a female. The character will be pre-defined and have her own dialogue. The premise: You are the daughter to a travelling merchant. One night, by a camp fire, a horde of zombies attack, mutilating your father and body guards. So, you must run away, fearing for your life. Luckily, you come across a castle who's master opens the gate for you. Inside, you discover that you are not the only one who has taken advantage of his hospitality. Twenty-Four (excluding the master and other people who already live in the castle). Little do you know, the master only intends that one of you will leave...

I declare that the only things I am thinking of at the moment are finishing last month's module and throttling Henesua for suggesting otherwise.''

As well as an assortment of other large, physically solid projects currently stretching my "workshop" beyond realistic limits, I have also finally commenced my series of NWN1 "DOCTOR WHO" Modules that I've been planning for six years or more. (Incidentally, for anyone interested, I've thrown a few Screenshots of the TARDIS Exterior and Interior at the Vault, should be up in a day or two - WIP at present).
Thus Starbright and Aurelia's third adventure "The Red Rune" is going to have to be postponed for the time being... Sorry about that. Hope nobody feels let down. They will return, um, eventually, at some point, honest... won't be this month though. Sorry.

Its never too late. You probably won't have a complete module by the deadline, but deadlines have been softened recently.

I say go for it. Have fun. Take risks.

I don't know how I missed this question.

The answer is no there is no maximum for play duration.

I did not receive anything this month which is disappointing. If anyone is considering a late submittal please let me know.

That's a pity... Damn... I'd have pushed myself to do Red Rune this month if I'd known nobody else was going to reach the finishing post, but it seemed there were other people doing stuff...

I think starting from scratch when I'm still not COMPLETELY sure of the storyline, plus getting the CC sorted, plus playtesting the sod to make sure it actually works, is pushing it, even for me, in more or less a single day.

Rest assured Starbright and Aurelia WILL be back though.

               Allright, i'll try.

Name: Whack-a-hole

Seed: Summoned

Story: On a sunny day, you walk on the dusty road. Birds sing merrily as the wind blows in the trees. A river flows not far away and there is a lovely farm right next to a small bridge. This sight reminds you that your last meal took place long ago. Perhaps the farmer could sell you something to eat.

Custom content:
We will see... Perhaps some Tarot RedHand Blood pools and some secret custom monsters. But i will do a "no haks" version too.

Update 07 may:
- 2 or 3 days! How foolish i was... Even if not starting anew (this old mini-project had some work previously done). At least i am making progress. I've got the concept defined, all the few needed areas, convs, npc, creatures but i need to custom script a lot to make it happen.

Update 22 may:
- Working on it (had to stop for RL stuff)... Module is close to 70% done.

04 june:
- Not too much progress lately (80%). Working on monsters and VFX.

28 june:
- Big RL interruption. Maybe 85% completed. Doing some custom monster behaviour scripts lately, no easy. But there is hope for fun monsters...

27 september:
- Scripting the grenade system. I am happy with monsters capabilities. Added a new area. Release approaching (95 % done? but last 5% is usually the most difficult dev part).
