2013 February, Adventure Building Challenge
« on: February 04, 2013, 01:51:12 pm »

The first Adventure Building Challenge is upon us complete.
Participants have had until Friday March 1st to complete their module.

February's Challenge was This month is a Free for All. Themes and Schemes are up to you as none are provided were chosen by the participants.

GO!

Send completed works on or before the deadline to abc.nwn@gmail.com

Entries are now available on the Vault. The Player's Review is ongoing. Play a module and comment on it in this thread.

La Ley of the Land:
  • Modules may be of any play length you like. It is recommended that the adventure require no more than an hour to complete, but like the Pirates say, this is just a guideline.
  • Modules shall be playable in vanilla NWN, meaning that third party add-ons (NWNX, NWShader etc...) are not required to play it.
  • The Module itself shall be the work of the participant, BUT scripts, conversations, blueprints etc... may be from any source. This means that anything contained within the module is NOT restricted. Please do provide credit to the makers of any resources you are using in your Readme.
  • Module Specific Custom Content (AKA the other stuff you submit with your module) is restricted to one of each filetype: HAK, TLK, Character File, Movie, etc... AND to a maximum combined size of 12 MB. Including a README is encouraged as players will at the least need some installation instructions. (Note: It is strongly encouraged that HAK, TLK and Module all share the same name to make things easier for users.)
  • Sponsored Custom Content is NOT restricted. Please see Adventure Building Challenge Resources for a complete list of custom content you may use in addition to the Module Specific Custom Content described above. Keep in mind that you will not be packaging Sponsored Custom Content with your submission. Players of your work will thus need to be directed to download and install the content in order to play your module.
  • Optional Player Content is NOT restricted. You are welcome to encourage players to use enhancements with your module. For example, you could upload custom music to the vault that your module is setup to use. Players that download the music will hear it. Others won't, but otherwise can still play. The same goes for sound affects, overrides etc.... Feel free in your installation instructions (README) to encourage players to download these. As long as the resources are not required to play your module there is no problem with setting up your module to take advantage of them.
  • All Deliverables which includes your Module, and Module Specific Custom Content are to be sent via email in one archive (eg. ZIP, 7Z, RAR). Although not required, including a Readme in the archive is recommended as players may need instructions. (If you are particular about the name you would like your work posted under or any other pertinent details, please let us know when you send it in.)
  • Entries received after the deadline will not be accepted.

A few other considerations:

Builders retain ownership of their submittal. It is important to us that you understand that you retain full rights to your work. When you submit your work to the ABC you are giving us the right to post it under your name as one of the submissions in the month's challenge. If you do not want your work posted by us, but still wish to be recognized as a participant in the challenge, please contact us and we'll work something out.

Teamwork is accepted and encouraged.

We recognize that the rules still need more clarification. We are working on a FAQ. If you have questions, post them in the  ABC thread and we'll answer as best we can.

Please keep this thread to discussion of this month's challenge. Screenshots of works in progress are encouraged.

For general discussion about the Adventure Building Challenge, please see the Adventure Building Challenge thread.

Technical questions are best posted throughout the forum.

A Poll for next month's Adventure Seeds is posted. Please vote.

Have any ideas for future polls or challenges? Please submit them to the Adventure Building Challenge thread for consideration.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, but I'll post my teaser outline if that makes any sense here:

Legends of the Deep: Precious Metals

Deep under the Malganen tundra lies the settlement of Labyrinth, populated by criminals and outcasts and lodged within an abandoned mithril mine. With the surface nations going to war yet again, more and more refugees are flocking to Labyrinth, leaving its people short of supplies and temper. One ray of hope remains: a vein of mithril was discovered in one of the far reaches of the mine, enough to support trade with the surface nations for food and supplies for the town. But the people of Labyrinth aren't the only ones who want the mithril: goblins, kobolds, deep elves, and worse all want the deep silver for their own purposes. If the outlaws and refugees of Labyrinth want to survive, they'll have to ensure that their competition doesn't.

"Legends of the Deep" is a miniseries premise that involves the people of the outlaw settlement of Labyrinth. Almost no one can be trusted, and every citizen of Labyrinth barely escaped a death sentance in one form or another on the surface world... but they all must work together to survive.

Major locations that may be visted in the minseries (depending on future ABC themes) include:

- The mithril mines ("Precious Metals")
- The nether forges, powered by fire elementals and ruled by red dragonkin.
- The mushroom farms, overrun by underground vermin after the abandoment of the mines.
- The barren tundra, a battlefield of the surface wars.

The miniseries will also include a hub module that includes stores and a way to start each adventure. Since the hub module will need to be updated as the ABC continues, there will be a "reset" function to restart with the most recently downloaded version of the Hub without leaving the module.

Author: Rolo Kipp
Campaign: The Pride of Cestus Dei
Title: Episode 12: Hordes!*

*now with more hoards :-)

edit: perhaps I could have given a *little* more info, but a good bit of the fun will come from surprises. Still, if you want to try out the prequel, download the demo (Episode 1: Get Ducky!) for the January 2012: Rogues CCC ;-)

Edit 2: I'm not entirely sure I should be lumped in with the "Knows what they're doing" crowd ;-)

Edit 3: changed the title to fit the emerging standard ;-)

Edit 4:

The start is almost where I want it, the middle is rough, but playable.
Working on endgame now.

               PHoD "The Black Book"
As the newest acolyte to join the decidedly bizarre Astral Library of Mysteries and Perculiar Studies, your initial eagerness to learn from the many erudite scholars at the institute and investigate strange phenomena throughout the Planes is quickly dampened by the evident fact that the "library" is not at all what you had imagined, nor so its scholars...
And enthusiasm is firmly drowned when an entire realm is invaded and destroyed by Undead Animals, rapidly evolving into something else, merely to form a bridgehead to breach the wards of the library so that "something" can steal a certain ancient book... a book that seems to be evolving just as rapidly as the creatures intent upon its theft... a book within the pages of which is an entire world, hidden and forgotten (deliberately) for millennia into which it is not wise to tread... worse so to encounter that which is bent on trying to escape the book...
And there's only you, a sarcastic talking dog and a lone scholar as demented as she is brilliant to stand in the path of something nobody sane would stand in the path of...

Author: Sir Adril
Series name: Ivore History: The Elven Wars
Subtitle: Hometown Hero

In the crossroad town of Knight's Ax Crick a young adventurer solving hometown problems soon stumbles into a much bigger mystery, one that may shake the peace of the Duchy of Freymoor.

Status: Building

Features
  • All new world
  • Tongue-in-cheek humor
  • Retired adventurers to guide your way
  • Companion characters to accompany you on your quest
  • Catfish noodling competition removed due to time constraints
  • Custom scripting
Sponsored haks used
Module Specific Materials
  • Ivore v. 0.5 hak - to include custom loadscreens, catfish inventory icons
Updates
Feb 6th - basic henchman functionality, resting system, scheduled events all beta tested. First quest to go to beta testing. Catfish noodling scripting in progress.
Feb 16th - First quest behaving as planned, second quest in progress. All but one planned area built, several still need the final decorations. Playing with lighting to produce an interesting mood. Catfish noodling still in progress.
Feb 20th - Adjusting XP scale to match classic D&D, rescripting to allow resting only once every 24 hours. The plan is now for the PC to get to at least Level 2 by the end of the adventure, ready for part 2. Catfish noodling cancelled - time constraints mean I can't get it scripted to work how I want it to work.
Feb 22nd - Second quest almost finished, scripting triggers associated with it. Second Henchman choice may be available, depending on whether I can finish her up in time.

Author's note: in testing, I think I prefer the low numbers of enemies you have to slog through to get to the next level that come with a standard D&D XP scale, I'll be adjusting my main story to fit this.

               Author: rogueknight333
Module Name: Snow Hunt

Brief Module Description:

The PC is a bounty hunter who has pursued a dangerous criminal into the frozen north. Aside from a small hunting lodge, all civilization has been left behind. Your quarry is hiding somewhere in this snow-bound wilderness filled with dangerous beasts, savage orc tribes and perhaps worse, but where?

Sponsored Content Currently Included:
Dec. 2011 CCC: Winter Stuff
Senemenalas' Icy Caverns
Winter Wild Lands

A module possibly inspired by the really cold winter going on where I am living. It is intended to be a limited side-quest-like adventure suitable for being incorporated into larger campaigns while also working as a self-contained module. I do not at this time have any particular larger campaign in mind, though potentially  I could release semi-sequels involving different bounty hunts against various categories of quary and in different settings.

That would be a neat series, rogueknight. I actually have a ranger PC in pen and paper whose primary job was bounty hunting. You just might have me inspired to build him in NWN to play that module '<img'>

Those who know me know that I never (with the exception of last months ccc and that was an accident) declare unless I have got it finished. This is because I drop almost as much as I start (if you are one of those who think the stuff I release is c--p, you ought to see the things that never see the light of day). All I will say at this point is that I have an idea that is being investigated and if it comes to fruition and is at least barely acceptable, you'll here about it here.
