battle music stuffs
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:26:21 am »

               helooo again.

i've been knocking up some original music for a module, i've got most stuff working nicely, but for some reason i can't get my battle music to play. it shows up in the toolset, but plays silence. Is this something to do with those stingers? and that "sbat" thing??

i tried checking the builders link in the custom content guide, but its dead and ust gives me the bioware homepage. is there anywhere i can learn a little more about how muzak doth work in the fair town of neverwinter?

if not, then i'd better find a gun and end my life now.

or something.

I use custom music in my pw

Since you can see the music in toolset, then I will assume that you have the 2da file done correctly.
Are you able to hear the music in toolset?

Eg - Choose it as the day/night music, and see if it plays?

If it doesnt play, under toolset, then it wont play under the game - they use same sort of engine.

If it doesnt play at all, then it could be a sound format issue.

BMU Files need to be mono, and less than 128k bit rate or something like that.
I cant remember for sure - the nwvault has a good app that converts the music, its not infallible, it doesnt work 100% of the time, but it is a good start.

okay, thanks, but it was none of those. the filename was 1 character too long, and NWN threw its toys out of the pram in disgust. when i changed the filename, it worked.

I still don't know what the "sbat" means btw. i see it in the 2da as the first stinger for all the other battle music in there, but there doesn't seem to be corresponing any files with "sbat" in their names.

oh, and while i'm on the subect, what's a stinger, and what's it for?

Because battle music is generally loud and quite chaotic, and because it typically ends very abruptly, a short clip of 'ending' music gets played when the music is told to stop, to give the transition a less hashed-together feel. Usually its either a closing variant on the battle theme, or a single loud note to end all notes. That is what's referred to as a 'stinger'.

The default NWN stinger files are .wav and stored in the main game archives - those are the sbat clips referred to. Your own stinger (if you use one) needs to go in the same hakpak as your ambientmusic.2da.
