Wyvern Crown of Cormyr second playthrough impression
« on: April 20, 2015, 12:51:04 am »

Having focused on premium modules lately and the option to play them offline, I decided I'd give Wyvern Crown of Cormyr a second go (I played it a long time ago but didn't remember that much anymore).

I rolled a human paladin, for two reasons mostly. First of all, I wanted to make full use of horses and a Summon Mount feat went nicely with that. Secondly, I thought it would fit the story nicely. My character and Edgar Truesilver could become best pals, two fellow paladins!

The "prelude" of the module was rather boring, but hey, not every good story begins with a blast. As soon as I reached Thunderstone and participated in the tournament, I was already immersed in Cormyr. Everything that came later was, to me, entertaining, although I felt like Fort Polter and Castle Wyvernwater took unnecessary long to explore. I didn't mind it much, though.

What I liked best is probably the feel of the module. DLA managed to bring out the typical medieval theme really well. The tilesets and music both help accomplish that. "Ogma" track is truly a masterpiece to me, I could listen to it for hours. I actually find it surprising - all Forgotten Realms adventures take place in a setting equivalent to medieval ages, yet it's this module only that literally screams "KNIGHTS AND HONOR AND STUFF". But I digress...

I found it surprising that many people disliked one of the most prominent features of the module, that is, horse support. I wasn't bothered by these several seconds of waiting to unhitch my mounts and mount up. Nor was I really displeased with horse combat. I personally think that DLA did a good job with mounted combat animations. Of course they are far from what mounted combat in real life usually looks like, but that's the best they could do in Neverwinter Nights, I believe. Oh, and jousting was a very fun mini-game, albeit a bit random.

I do, however, agree with most reviewers that the ending feeled rushed. When I played the module for the first time, I expected the mist dragon to appear at least once more, as it promised to do, but this did not happen. This small disappointment did not really stop me from enjoying the module, of course.

What I'd considered a bigger problem was some bugs and some not really thought-out situations.

I found myself unable to progress at least twice during my playthrough, because I did not do what the designers expected me to do and got blocked. Luckily, I had some earlier save files, but had I not, I'd have probably just rage-quit.

All in all, it was a nice (and sentimental) playthrough, with some minor issues. To me, Wyvern Crown of Cormyr is the best of all official premium modules by far and rivalling an unreleased premium module, Darkness over Daggerford, in quality. If anyone who is reading this still hasn't played it, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. Just make sure you keep several save files not to fall prey to progression check mate and you will most likely enjoy the module.
