Are people still playing SP modules?
« on: October 20, 2012, 12:50:37 pm »

I'm a few weeks into building a single player module, and I'm taking my time with making it look all nice with CEP and whatnot, but I'm curious if people even still pay attention or play SP Modules anymore?

The genre of my module is Story Light / Action in a Low-Medium magic environment - if that matters.

There is a lot of value in designing them to allow for MP compatibility as well.

Typically, members of our LAN group will be sampling the SP modules and then will try to adapt an interesting one for on-line play.  It usually takes a bit of tweaking, but as long as it doesn't require a massive rework to make it playable for multi, an SP design can get a lot of mileage.   You'll probably get more activity if designed and advertised for 1-4 players at least.

Just one opinion, amigo... good luck!

I agree with the multiplayer feature being valuable.  LAN play is a blast and people that don't have the time to commit to persistent words play downloadable modules

While the multiplayer feature is a great idea, there are still those of us going pure single, as well. I love a good SP module, and expect I will continue to do so for years to come.

Making the changes to allow multiplayer wouldn't be hard at this point, thankfully, although it would have to be for a small party of 1-3 players.

As far as getting the word out there, what are the appropriate channels?

I know nwvault is used for hosting the module and any extras (haks etc), but by the looks of it, the nwvault forums are pretty dead. Even these forums are very slow moving.

Posting on this forum will help. Making a preview module on the IGN's NWNVault will also help.  I beta will often not only help get the word out that a module is being build but if the concept is interesting enough for people they're likely to help you in building the module, most often through testing and giving useful feedback.

Good luck with your project.

There is also Neverwinter Nexus and Moddb sites that host NWN modules.

Gog.com forums have most of the new players that have just purchased the game digitally so it is another place to hit.

Making a short trailer on the YT may prove to attract some ppl to your creation as well.

A fair few do play, but the community's not nearly as big as it was even a few years ago. If you think you've got something really good, it might be worth posting about it on these forums or elsewhere. I'm currently finishing off a very detailed single-player module - while I don't expect hundreds of downloads, I know that some real-life friends of mine are excited to play it, and that's enough reason for me personally to want to make a module. These sorts of campaigns are a really good format for telling stories, if that sort of thing interests you.

Sounds like something I'd be interested in, for what that's worth.

I'm still making a SP module and playing some, but it's usually the shorter ones, due to lack of free time.

I still play SP mods. I play also official games but when I am done with them I always come back to mods.. NWN1, NWN2 and DA mods: that's my main resource for games.

How much time do you have to devote to a module? MultiP mods require more work, there's a whole lot more to consider when building an adventure for 2 to 4 players of varied skills and talents. Don't get me wrong a good MP is great however a good SP mod has many advantages.
SP is best for engageing the player within the story, no distractions during play and time is not a factor.
I'd advise you to focus and build on the story you wish to tell first. Then you will have a better understanding of the game type.  MP or SP.

oh yes, back to your question, there will always b a market for SP games.
Thx,
Good luck on your game.
