What happened to Wyvern Crown of Cormyr 2?
« on: October 18, 2011, 09:41:25 am »

A question was raised in this topic: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/195/index/8414322/1 regarding if there was ever a sequel planned for Wyvern Crown of Cormyr. In short, yes, but it never happened. Wyvern Crown was originally plotted over 2-3 modules, and the ending of the first part was dependant on the actions you took in that module. As released, the changes were mainly cosmetic (who wore the crown and who was who's boss, without making spoilers), but part 2 picked up right where part 1 left off with the impact your decision had, and how Caladnei and co reacted to it. Part 2-3 essentially had good and evil parallel paths planned (with some cross-over).

Part 2 never saw the light of day. Shortly after the fiasco of off and on again premium modules, I began work with some of the DLA team on a series for Obsidian for NWN2 - the story actually picked up a thread from Wyvern Crown, Kathryn's lycanthropy, and wove it into some of the law of Cormyr so that a finished Wyvern Crown and a finished NWN2 mod (I forget what it was called now) would have sat very nicely side by side. Unfortunately Atari struck again and that mod also died. I still have some of the plotlines for that series and a few dialogues with Marc Price, who I had worked with on the Tales of the Sundering series, and asked to help out.

Following this disappointment, myself and a few of the DLA folks began work on an expansion for the Witcher. This project was also plagued with issues (not sure if these were Atari's or CDProjekt Red's), but after work began, it had to be restarted from scratch because of a clash with another project on the Witcher, and this in turn then collapsed when the project was again cancelled after starting. I also still have the plots of both these mods, as well as a lot of the dialogue.

In parallel I had been forced to turn down a job on the Total War series because of life issues, and decided that fate was against me, basically giving up on game writing. After a brief hiatus I decided to pick up WCoC 2 again, only for both my PCs to crash in parallel and wipe out most of the work (my backup disc also died with only a partial recovery). I went to seek inspiration instead from all the guides and walkthroughs I had in the DLA forums, but as you know, these also were lost and Steel Wind confirmed he didn't have a copy.

The end result of all this: I just began to feel like it was never going to happen - so it never did! '<img'>

I congratulate you on your longsuffering nature; far greater than mine. FWIW, time spent in creativity - even if it does not see the light of day publically - is a positive mental exercise. IMO.

Have you any idea of whether or not the fluxuating control of Atari has had with D&D titles would make such reattempts possible?

I think I am probably done, just because real life is very tough at the moment. But you never know right? I enjoy both writing and programming so you can never say never. It's a shame not to have the core of the mod to start from though as that perished - along with the Wanderer III, which was at least a third done when I interrupted to do the WCoC & Tales of the Sundering premium module projects. I think about 18 months ago I would seriously have restarted either if I hadn't discovered their demise! A couple of people also approached me to resurrect them with my help, but I guess they never started as I heard nothing more.

I have no idea if it sim or not, but have you considered writing for Kindles? I believe the author of the Aielund series is doing that currently; could allow you a way to distribute your work.

Thanks for your greatest games, Mister BenWH.

Are those the ones you also mentionned?
Tales of the Sundering: White Eagle Isle
Tales of the Sundering: Prelude
Tales of the Sundering: South Rock

I also read something about a "Hub module" around those?

Okay, here we go:

Tales of the Sundering: Hub

Wait! I played those... 'B)'
'gave the best note on the vault even.
Wait, where is my brand new list...
Thanks, that's gonna make my life easier: 4 different pages... ':crying:'

Just wanted to chime in and say thanks for what all you have done for NWN.  I got to this party late (fall 2008) and have seen plenty of references to your work.  Whole lot of legacy going on there!

Thanks all - and jmlzemaggo, yes that was the series. We released it as free work (it was never Premium ready) and you can find the links to all the mods on the page of the Prelude, which I wrote. I recall there were 8 of them of varying quality.

You've had a lot of bad luck with lost data Ben, that must have been horrid! ;/

On the upside, you have in varying capacities given the NWN community a whole heap of wonderful work. For that I really do thank you from the bottom of my (considerable dragon) heart '<img'>

It is lovely to see you still keep up with the forums and the NWN/NWN2 gaming communities. '<img'>

Only when JP reminds me! Was sad to see the end of the Review Guild. You did a great job with that for such a long time!

Hello, Ben!  I miss working with you and the rest of the DLA team.  External issues aside, I truly enjoyed working on those projects you mentioned.  Wyvern Crown would have been positively epic had it been allowed to come to its fruition.  If i recall correctly it would have played out like a microcosm of GRMM's game of thrones in the Cormyr and surrounding regions.  Good times....                I recall a scene towards the closing of the module where Caladnei and the Cormyrian forces were fighting a desperate battle to hold back and distract the Witch Lord's hordes whilst the hero attempted to break into the Witch Lord's stronghold to end the threat from there.  Positively awesome!

I'm late to the party, Ben, but I also want to thank you for your inspiring work. And to encourage you not to give up on your dreams.

Good luck to you.

So, for those searching for some help on the Ride Like a Centaur quest, I did manage to find an old document with the below:

Quest: Ride Like a Centaur
Location: Hullack Forest (Meeting the informant)
Questgiver: Manthis
Other quest objects: Alice Broadhand, Lord Huntcrown, Kathryn Hawklin
Alignment score values: None for this quest

Hullack Forest
When the PC visits the satyr Manthis for information on the raids, he will also promise the PC an item that will allow them to ride like a centaur (a pair of gloves that increase their mounted combat abilities by granting the feats Mounted Combat, Mounted Archery and a Ride skill bonus), if the PC will in return find out who is responsible for hunting the Forest Folk. Manthis is able to offer little in the way of leads, except that it might be a lord. Manthis also warns the PC that they do not have inifinite time to complete this request – only until they next meet.

Discovering who’s behind the hunting

Only two people have the information on who might be behind the hunting. Kathryn Hawklin may reveal information voluntarily if she is in the party, stating that Lord Huntcrown has expressed an interest in hunting unicorns. Alternatively, if the PC has started the ‘Theft to Order’ quest, they can intimidate or persuade Alice Broadhand (in the Six Coffers) to reveal who it is that wants the unicorn horn involved in that quest. This can be done at the start or on returning to Alice. Any of these will unlock the door to Huntcrown’s house and allow entry.

Thunderstone: Huntcrown House
On confronting Huntcrown, the PC may choose/experience a number of different options:
·    The PC decides to blackmail Huntcrown for money rather than an oath to stop hunting (though they can stil get the oath on top by delivering the unicorn horn from ‘Theft to Order’).
·    The PC can extract an oath out of Huntcrown, either in exchange for the unicorn horn, or by threat.
·    The PC (and Kathryn,w ho will also try), fail to extract an oath from Huntcrown.

Polter’s Fort: Approach
Manthis will again confront the PC as they travel to Polter’s Fort, asking if the PC has discovered who is behind the hunting.
·    The PC has not found out anything.
·    The PC is able to share suspicions only.
·    The PC gives Manthis the written oath and gains the reward.
