Looking for some module recommendations
« on: July 10, 2011, 11:12:01 pm »

Hey folks, i recently re-installed NWN and i'm going through the regular campaign, but i'm also planning to play with a friend and his not too eager to play the campaign, so i'm looking for some mod recommendations.

Before i get down to what kind of module we're looking for, i'ld like to know if all players need the module (i know they would need the haks, if any) or if only the host needs it?

Anyways, here's a brief rundown of what we're looking for.

Supported Players: 2 - 4.
Setting: Any, but we would like to avoid Sci Fi and/or Space themed settings, i know a few mods with those settings exist.
Length: Don't particular care, but 4+ would be nice.
Supported Races/classes: The more, the merrier. I would personally like to see support for all available classes...nothing that irks me off more then to play a rogue in a module that doesn't have any use for disable traps, search and so on and so forth. Bottom line: We'ld like our class choices to impact our gameplay (i.e maybe if there's no rogue in the party, we miss out on some stuff we can't get to without a rogue). Subraces however, we don't care much about.
RP and Hack & Slash: We like to bash skulls in...a lot. But it's nice when we're given some incentive to do so. But in other words, we don't want to sit through hours to story text or dialogue, but some medium RP would be nice.
Magic Level:  Low to Medium. I'ld also greatly appreciate it if the better stuff had to be earned, not freely found in heaps and piles on every other kill.
Difficulty: Any, but not too easy please...if all thats required is charging into the enemy to conquer it, we're going to get bored rather quick.

Oh, we'ld also like to avoid PWs, they feel too much like MMO Grinding which we terribly dislike.

Finally, if it helps, we're playing the original Baldur's Gate right now and we find it to be loads of fun '<img'>

Thanks!

You could try Shadowlords, Dreamcatcher and Demon campaign. First instalment here: http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=1935
I am not able to tell who needs to download hakpaks and module, because I always play single.

The Aeilund series; skip the final mod (not included below). As with the LotR films, this one has a couple of conclusions, and the included one should be fine for your group. And for those that wish to explore the complete story, simply play the Epic finale Pt 3 later.

The Aielund Trilogy Act One-Nat Abhors Vacuum
The Aielund Trilogy Act Two-Defender of Crown
The Aielund Trilogy Act Three-Return of the Ironlord
The Aielund Saga Act IV - The Fall of Aielund Pt1
The Aielund Saga Act IV - The Fall of Aielund Pt2

Thanks for the replies, Shadowlords and Aielund both look interesting.

Is Shadowlords, Dreamcatcher and Demon Campaign part of the same series? or are they seperate serieses?

All the same series, though I did not complete Demon.

Thanks, i'll share the links with my friend and see what we decide. Still open to more suggestions though i'll post back some thoughts once we decide where to start and we check it out, probably sometime next week or the week after '<img'>

I'll second Aielund.  I also think the final Act is worth playing and one of the best acts of the series, though there is a semi sci-fi theme that pops up, along the theme of "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."  No lasers or jumping through hyperspace (unless you count traveling the planes as hyperspace), though, if that's what you're afraid of.

I have also enjoyed the Ravenloft duo of mods by Firestarter, if y'all like D&D Horror classics:

Return to Ravenloft
Ravenloft, Beyond the Gate

Never tried Horror themed mods on NWN, but i'll take a peek and share it with my friend.

Thanks.

Also, does anyone know if Aielund Saga (or any of the suggested mods so far) are playable using the Core Rules difficulty?

My playing partner and I played Aielund on Hardcore and with Tony K's AI (which generally makes things a bit more difficult). I thought it was a bit tougher than, say, HotU or Sands of Fate (very high magic modules), which I would guess most people would have more fun with difficulty set to Very Difficult.

You should note that Aielund is what most would call medium magic throughout most of it, but it drifts a little higher toward the end when the characters are progressing through epic levels.

               Thanks for the response.

I just ask because i know some mods don't play well on higher difficulties or become too unbalanced. '<img'>

The Millenium Mirror of Seeing could be a nice thing to play with diverse party - see the readme/website linked. I have not played it myself since I cannot do it alone.

How do you install the Aielund mods? each chapter brings 2 mods and the next one wants to overwright one of the mods of the previous chapter...''

"Hardcore" rules simply are standard rules, they're not really increased difficulty (and Aielund is intended to be played with that rule set).

Aielund Act I will contain ALL of Act 1 and a placeholder for Act 2.  This is so when you finish Act 1 your game doesn't crash trying to load Act 2 (which wouldn't exist).  If you look at the file sizes you'll notice the Act 2 in the Act 1 download is very small, same for the Act 3 in the Act 2 download, and the Act 4 Part 1 in the Act 3 download, etc.

Aka, yes, you want to overwrite the smaller/placeholder mod you downloaded with the previous Act.
