Hak folder managing tool?
« on: March 05, 2013, 02:51:07 pm »

I wonder, has anyone ever thought of creating a simple tool for managing the NWN hak folder, similar e.g. to Goudea's NWN launcher (that allows for several override folders and then copies the content of the relevant folder into the default override)? Or in the vein of that PC portrait manager (I forgot the name, NW Spider or something)?

I don't often hear people complaining about their cluttered hakpak folder, so maybe it's a minority issue, but personally I'd find it really helpful if I could put all the hak files in separate subfolders, e.g. "CEP1.x", "CEP2.x", "ProjectQ" or even "Haks required for Module XYZ" and then have a tool that allows me to "install" and "uninstall" them by copying or moving the files to the main hak folder or deleting them.

If you're someone like me who often plays several modules or module series during the same period or who checks out several different PWs or modules at the same time occasionally, the hak folder can become cluttered pretty quickly and then it's hard to tell which hakpaks I still require and which ones I don't (or even what module they belong to, as not all hakpaks are helpfully named). Whenever my harddrive is lacking storage, the NWN hak folder is usually the first to look and maybe the biggest in size of all folders on my harddisk ...

Anyway, does anyone know if there already is a tool that can accomplish something like what I have in mind? I assume Goudea's NWN Launcher would be capable of that if slightly modified, but I don't know if the author is still around and I myself have no programming knowledge and tools to do it myself, although I'd think it should be pretty basic (as it only involves copying).

Also, am I the only one who'd find such a tool useful?

Totally agree. But haks kind of don't need this, as they only conflict if the same name, my focus is more on overrides and other content where everything in the folder is used. As long as there is not multiple versions of the same named hak, you should be able to download all of CEP1 and all of CEP2 at the same time and have it all in your hak folder without issues, the way the haks are linked to the module actually manages usage.

I might eventually provide something like this though, still working out how as I don't like lots of duplicate files  (researching symlinks), probably going to be more of a interface which you choose a configuration and it swaps those files out quickly, generally designed to support modules and PW's custom content, but allowing player choices as well.

Not really the aim as my goal is not just managing haks, but installation from the vault as well, and what you are describing would be using locally cached downloads so it can do it quickly, and then dynamically assembling tlk files, 2da files, haks and injecting what is needed in the module, you hit play with your choices of content, the tool downloads, installs, configures automagically, then opens up the module in NWN2 so you can select your character and just play.

Yep, Win 7 messed up my system in the hak folder. I used to be able to edit the properties. So I'd organize by PW, author, project.
Bleh.....I've learned to let it go.
