Persistent World Content Sharing
« on: June 15, 2012, 04:08:31 pm »

Reason I put this here- was because I saw this being something that would be achieved by a custom tool/plugin that distributes the content.
But yes - I agree it could also go into Custom Content section.

I've had an idea that ive been nursing for a while now.

My own PW Server uses music, and Sound Effects that are distributed to players in the form of override content.
The music itself doesnt conflict with hak content, and would work with the official campaign and vanilla servers, because the music numbers are added after the official bioware content.

But the idea I had, was
What if alot of PW Servers did things like contribute their own music, and sound effects to a large pool of shared content.

And then the players had an application, where they could just select tick boxes for what content they want to download.

The benefit being that content that exists outside of haks is accessible, but not required in order to gain entry to a server. PW Makers would have a large pool of audio resources, and sounds that can be used in their PW Server, and if they wanted to add some extra sounds, they just submit the sounds, and the players almost automatically download those sounds.

Other PW Servers part of the scheme would have the option of being syncronized with the content, eg -
'Persistent World A' Uploads a BMU sound file to use in their areas -
Players automatically download this
The music is audible to those players.
The players who dont download it, wont hear it, but wont be denied access either.
'Persistent World B' - Is also able to make use of this shared resource, and add it to his own areas etc.
Players from PW A and PW B would then be able to hear the same music - as long as the sharing mechanism kept the ambientsounds.2da sync'd.

Has anyone ever considered such a thing
It would be like CEP
Except it is non-blocking, and potentially focusing on music/audio - or other resources that are non-crashing/blocking if the client doesnt have the content.

Granted - Audio sharing would need to be policed  - Eg - Uploading Titanic - by celine Dion would be a bannable offence... I mean... come on...

That being said.
I think there is some obscure law that says that you can use clips from audio tracks, if they are below a certain bitrate, and below 1 minute in length.
Which would certainly open up potential for using short tracks that could be set to loop - ambient sounds etc

Even if we dont like the idea of sharing full music tracks - Sound Effects, such as weather, water, voices etc, would definitely be ok to share if we made them ourselves.
This is an example of 2 sound effects I made with my voice, and an iPhone - its easy to make nwn sounds.
