Creating A Super Fast Server...
« on: May 13, 2012, 04:47:19 am »

For those that are interesting creating a super fast server which runs from a RAM Disc, you will want to check out this article...

Open Source Ram Disc Software

Essentially, by using RAM as a virtual drive, one could (on Windows or Linux) setup their server on a Virtual Drive, which would indeed make it extremely fast & responsive.  Provided you don't plan on rebooting the server computer any time soon, that is, otherwise you would lose the virtual drive.

(Obviously you will need a 64 Bit System & at least 4-8 GB of AVAILABLE RAM)

You could backup the virtual drive to disc automatically, to ensure you always have an updated copy of the server, should the computer go down due to electrical issues etc... (I use Karen's Tools - Just Google It)

Anyway, this is the kind of IO you can expect on this super fast server..

Granted you will need a high quality Internet Connection (10 Mbps or higher) & a quality quad core computer, like an Intel i5-2400 / 2500k (or i5-750) processor etc..

Here is a Guide to setup ImDisk properly, it's very well written and works perfectly!

I forgot to mention, obviously you will need at least 3-6 GB of unused RAM in order to properly use this "ideal", having 2 or 3 GB of RAM total wouldn't probably cut it, as the base files would exceed 1.8 GB alone for the server, NOT counting ServerVault & Module, and any other custom content you have, like haks etc...

-----------------------------------------
NOTE:

Currently I'm unable to get nwnx2 to launch properly (It launches, but it's "trying" to load the module from the C: Drive) from the virtual drive, if anyone has information on how to setup nwnx2 to run from another drive, that would be very helpful for the community, as I have yet to get it to work from the virtual drive.

With RAM sticks being so cheap, you should be able to pick up like an extra 16 gigs for around maybe $50-70  (should be less than $100, for sure)

Having a 16 GB Server running from a RAM Disc would be super awesome..

Essentially you will need to make an image backup (take the server offline) of the drive to ensure data isn't lost...

Might even want to do automated backup on your databases & server vault to your hard drive...
(Cobian Backup is free and it works well)
