Large Address Aware & nwServer.exe
« on: March 12, 2012, 12:54:41 pm »

Has anyone tried running nwServer with the LAA Flag enabled on the executable?

I know the nwServer.exe is reasonably stable, and most crashes occur due to script errors, or plugin issues - which raises the question, why bother enabling an applicaton such as nwServer.exe to have access to more Ram.

I never thought that LAA made much of a difference, until I played skyrim, and saw first hand, that the constant crash that occured every hour to hour and half, vanished immediately upon using an LAA Enabled Executable for Skyrim.

In the end, the Skyrim Dev's released an official LAA Skyrim executable.

I am currently running my nwServer.exe with LAA - So far, no bad behavior, I am just keeping it monitored, to see if it improves performance at all.

my server was already pretty stable, having uptimes of 48-72 hours etc - So trying to gauge whether LAA is useful or not, will be entirely based on lag from a player point of view.

Has anyone tried LAA before,
What was your opinions on it, in relation to nwServer.exe - was it useful, or a waste of time?

Skyrim crashes when it hits 2GB memory limit because it really uses all that RAM for texture, geometry and game data.
I've never seen NWN use more than 300 MB of RAM, so this flag will simply do nothing.
It may be useful for NWN2 server, though.

Would it be better to have it, and not need it, than to need it and not have it?
I mean, does it pose any stability risk, in having it, and not needing it?

No, it'll just do nothing. '<img'>

If you are actually running out of address space, then it should provide some relief provided your host OS is a 64-bit OS.  Running out of address space would usually result in the server crashing.

It's likely to be low risk to flip the LAA bit given that it is the out-of-the-box default on NWN2, and the sort of underhanded tricks that break when the LAA bit is thrown would also have not worked on the Linux NWN1 port anyway.
