Turning Undead with Linu
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:58:35 pm »

Is there any way to control Linu's turning ability? I want her to turn the bodak guarding Quint (or is it Quin?) in the Charwood village castle, or at least get rid of some of his minions, but I just can't seem to find a way.

In fact while I'm on the topic is there any other quick ways to defeat the bodak? His death gaze just wipes my party out in seconds. I'm a level 9 wizard if that helps.

I almost never take Linu with me, so I am not sure here, but I think that Tony K's AI will have her attempt to turn when there are undead about.

As for the Bodak, the death gaze can be pretty rough, particularly with a low Fortitude save. I believe the DC is 17. Obviously rings of fortitude (you can wear more than one) and constitution-increasing items will help, along with amulets, cloaks and so on that grant general saving throw bonuses. If you are really stuck, then go back to Neurik or Eltoora and pony up for a Belt of Guiding Light. A Shadow Shield scroll would also be useful.

As for strategy, it may be useful try and arrange things so that only one character (the one with the best Fort save or immunity item) is facing the Bodak. Have that character get the Bodak's attention and keep the rest to the side. As I recall, there is a wide area in front of the door where the Bodak emerges, so it should be possible to keep his attention away from the vulnerable members. Also, if you or Linu can summon an undead creature (e.g. Animate Dead), they are immune to the Bodak's gaze. I don't know if he will use it on them, but that would be a good minion to send in first to keep him from zapping you.

The standard AI, in the case of Linus turn undead ability, she will turn undead continusly untill she can no longer do it, after each rest. (provided of course if there are undead to be turned.) In the case of the bodak, your best bet is to clear everything up to it, go back and rest, and then let her at it. She of course may not be able to turn the thing, before it kills her.

The Bodak does not have true seeing and can be approached either through stealth, or invisibility. If I remember correctly, if you sneak up on him within melee range and attack him he skips the death gaze and tries to melee with you. He is also very susceptible to Knockdown. If you have a fighter type as a henchman, one with a decent attack bonus, you could try casting invisibilty on the fighter and send him in to attack the Bodak. He shouldn't break out of invis until his first strike.

It seems like I am the one which grows too fond for ranged attacks... I kill that Bodak this way:
I get in Quint chamber by another lateral passage by unlocking or bashing it, once inside i begin to nail the bodak at proper distance. The Bodak will start to bash that door which separates it from you in order to get in sight for his death attack, you'll have to hurry (speed potions) or instruct your henchman for ranged attacks too.

Usualy I have my PC wear the belt of the guiding light, so the bodaks gaze/howl doesn't affect my character.
