Showstopper bug entering Act III
« on: December 01, 2012, 11:21:52 pm »

So...I've run into a showstopper bug. We have the big battle, go to the
Valsharess's stronghold, and I kill her. Mephistopheles nukes me and I
load into the Gatehouse ... but when I talk to the reaper, the only new
conversation option I get is something about teleporting me to the
leader of my party. (I tried that, by the way, and he creates a new door ... that "teleports" me right back to where I was standing, because I AM the leader.)

He doesn't recognize that I've been killed,
although my journal updates correctly (Escape from the Hells) to
indicate I've been sent to the hells. Help? =/ I redid the battle with
the Valsharess (from the auto save inside the throne room) and I still
got the same bug.

I also noticed I didn't get to go to the Mindflayers area before the final battle triggered, but I couldn't remember if that was based on too many trips back to town or if that was buggy, too.

In Chapter 2, theoretically you're only supposed to be able to go to three areas, though you can go to all five if you know how.

Regarding the show-stopper bug...did you edit your campaign module?  The script checks to see if you're in chapter 3.  If you did edit it or are playing a customized version, I can probably help you fix it.

I have never had to do anything special to finish 4 of the areas. Either that, or I have been doing something special without knowing it.
Then, I figured out how to do all 5. I do the undead first, then the 2 islands (either order), then the beholders, but don't enter the last room yet, then return to town for your last opportunity to sell loot and shop, then finish the beholders and do the mind flayers without returning to town in between, which would have triggered the battle immediately.

Unfortunately, this does not solve your bug.

I'd have to be at home to check for certain, but if I did anything to the game it was to install the CEP. I know I considered it. Otherwise no, no modding. =/ I did SoU just fine, imported that character into HotU and played it through from the beginning.

EDIT: Actually what I have installed looks like a UI change (colourized icons) and a mod to let you modify armor appearance at will via the crafting menu. That's it.

I think that MM may be asking whether you have edited XP2_Chapter3 in the Toolset. People sometimes change the name of the module when editing and that can cause trouble with The Reaper's dialog. More directly, if you open the above campaign module in the Toolset, you can look at Edit -> Module Properties and go to the Basic tab to see what the Tag field has in it.  It will normally be x0_module3. You might want to post what you find there, as it can help someone determine whether that's part of the issue you are having.

BTW, I think that the dialog option to return to the party leader is only supposed to appear for PCs who don't have the Relic of the Reaper. Does your PC have it?

OK, I'll check that out when I'm on my comp.

And the module tag? Issues related to that could cause the problem you are having...

Sorry, I had to wait until I got home to check '<img'> I definitely did not open any modules in the toolset before ... but I do not have an XP2_Chapter3 it seems -- just 1 and 2 (and SOU, of course).

I am not sure how to go forward. I bought this install from from gog.com ... just redownload/reinstall maybe?

I think that if you add the line
CODEWORD XP2=barkeater
to your nwnplayer.ini file, you should be able to open chapter 3 in the Toolset. Then you could check the module tag.

But, especially since you haven't modified the module, reinstalling may be the easiest thing to try. You can keep your saves, localvault, and database folders, so that you can try starting chapter three by completing the end of chapter 2 again or by using your saved character. If you picked up custom items in SoU like the power stone or spellstaff and are still using them, the database folder stores the info on the powers that you set when you created them.

I'm pretty sure it's just not there. Nothing in my modules folder either that it could have been renamed to. Reinstall it is I guess. '<img'>

What module does your saved game claim you're in?

...I have no idea why. I do have a character creator module installed but that's it.

That is definitely the issue, or at least part of it. Did you start the campaign from the normal "NWN: Hordes of the Underdark" menu, or did you choose "Other modules..."? It's certain not unusual for people to mod the default campaigns, but it's odd for that to happen without you ever using the Toolset to do it or having installed a mod for it.

I am guessing that a clean install will sort this issue, but I am curious as to the initial cause. It's probably worthwhile to back up your current install before re-installing. At least keep the folders mentioned above, since some of them (like the saves) may be needed to continue your current run.

But, you may find that you can't continue from your end-of-chapter-2 save. You'll have to start chapter 3 fresh and just use your saved character from the end of chapter 2.

That's probably the fastest way to continue.  Also, I'd leave the CEP files out of the equation until Chapter 3 starts and performs the way that it should.  Unfortunately, I think the variable that determines which of the henchfolk from Chapter 2 will appear with the reaper convo is set during the closing of Chapter 2 and placed on the module Chapter 3 opening rather than on the character itself.  This can be checked, but IIRC if you start Chapter 3 afresh the bic file won't contain the proper variable.  But maybe still worth a stab.   I'm betting the reaper knows nothing about the 3 henchies.

Depending on which character utility you are using you may be able to set up or reset variables, I think Leto provides that functionality, but that is only heresay on my part, having never played around with custom utilities.

Just regular HotU start. The first time I've ever even opened the toolset was just now to check what you asked me to, lol.

Not sure if I'm understanding ... you're saying if I do a fresh install, I may not be able to continue with my last (not-broken) saved game? Just import a character or something?
